LA Bans Frisbees! Or Does it?
Nope, it doesn't. There's no Frisbee ban. You've likely read the news report that LA passed a law slapping a $1,000 fine on playing Frisbee at the beach. Then other news outlets picked up on it, announcing throwing a Frisbee "will cost you a cool $1,000 thanks to a new ordinance passed by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday." The only thing is it isn't true. A little digging revealed that the fine has been greatly exaggerated, and that it's not a new ordinance at all!
Finding that Special Someone, Online
Stores have been letting us know that Valentine’s Day is coming up since mid-January. Pink plush hearts, red foil wrapped chocolate roses, and “I Love You” smashed across windows leave no room for doubt that someone out there is buying, and receiving, all that well marketed luv. It can be kind of sweet, but it can also be frustrating if you’re valentine-less this year. Friends make great valentines, but if you’re looking for something more romantic, consider getting ready for next year with internet sites.
Airport Networking
Just because you're jumping on a plane out of Los Angeles doesn't mean it's time to stop meeting people. Fact of the matter is, it's never time to stop networking. LAX (or any other airport) can be a great place to make connections and meet new people in your industry. Now I'm not saying you should be running around interrupting and forcing your way onto anyone and everyone, or that you should spend money on a ticket so you can get past security, but you never know who you are going to be sitting next to at the terminal or, better yet, on the plane.
Cheap and Plenty: Super Bowl Snacks
There is usually a mix in every Super Bowl crowd: the ones there for the games, the ones there for the commercials, and the ones in it for the snacks. We don't judge your motivation for hanging out with friends during Super Bowl XLVI (that's 46 for you who never learned Roman numerals or are too lazy to add letters, natch). Whether you're hosting or in charge of bringing a tasty treat, read on for some suggestions for Super Bowl snacks.
Pacific Standard Time and You
For the last few months, billboards, street lamp signs, and even some ATMs have been declaring the presence of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 – 1980. It's basically a "hugely ambitious six-month initiative that tells the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene" (end quote). Over 80 galleries, museums, and programming partners got together with some major funders to create over 68 major museum exhibitions, over 125 art galleries exhibitions, and a huge Public Art Festival to Los Angeles from October 2011-April 2012.
Cardborigami and the Homeless of Los Angeles Skidrow
As our name suggests, we at RentFoodBroke are very aware of the precariousness of our current situation. There are many in our city who, for a myriad of reasons, do not have homes. Recently, we were lucky enough to spend some time with Tina Hovsepian, inventor and founder of Cardborigami. An architect, Tina developed a temporary, portable shelter to try and provide some respite for those without permanent structures. She generously agreed to share some of her thoughts and experiences in downtown's Skid Row. The following is what she shared:

Safety Tips for Driving in the Rain
Here in SoCal we are used to navigating our roads in sunny conditions. However, we've had a wet winter, and as the rain pours down, the constant sirens remind us that perhaps it would be wise to adjust our driving style just a bit. Thus, we bring you some safety tips for driving in the rain.
Traffic and Your Career
Traffic. It's annoying, unpredictable, a constant topic of conversation, and everyone's favorite excuse for being late in this town. Just because it's acceptable for your boss and everyone else in the office doesn't mean it lets you off the hook. Since traffic is a serious factor of LA life, consider carefully how it might be affecting your career.
The Benefits of Taking a Class: More Than Just Learning
So you've moved out to the big city and you're ready to meet new and like-minded people. You could try to attend every social networking event out there, but let's face it, being a full-time schmoozer can become daunting. And while there's no doubt the internet is changing the way we meet and communicate, it still doesn't compare to meeting people the old-fashioned way: face to face and fully clothed. Let's also imagine you haven't landed any work yet. Nothing can make you feel lazy quite like free time can. A solution: take a class.
