04 Autumn/Winter 2010_2011 —
Guapo is a young magazine aimed primarily at young men, which, no doubt, pretty much guarantees that it will also attract some older fans motivated by aspiration, desire or a combination of both. Operating on a Madrid-Paris-New York editorial axis, it is simply dripping in boy totty; pouting, scowling, wearing too much make-up and generally being camper than a row of tents. Guapo is printed proof that the youth zeitgeist in men’s fashion has wholeheartedly embraced the effete sensibility that last had this much of a foothold in popular notions men’s fashion in the 1980’s: ‘straight acting’ is over, even for straight men.
Seeing itself as a ‘unique biannual international magazine that combines fashion with avant-garde art and style’, it can’t be faulted on offering fashion. The whole magazine is more or less fashion, including those items that purport to relate to some other topic but still appear to have been selected for underscoring the magazine’s own fashions tastes rather than by some more removed criteria. Many young trendy fashionistas – or a fans thereof- will find this a wonderful magazine and those who have been around a lot longer will no doubt recognise where its talents lie.
