Instabooth – fun photos for Instagram and more ($0.99) by Pixel Research Labs is a fun photo app for your iPhone.

When Apple introduced Photo Booth on the iPad 2, they somehow forgot to get that app over on the iPhone 4S. But don’t worry, that’s why there are third party developers. The fine folks at Pixel Research Labs seem to have concocted a solution that is great for any iPhone user that misses the fun of Photo Booth on the iPad 2.

I noticed Instabooth because of the fabulous looking icon. Seriously? It’s one of the best I’ve seen for such an app. So I decided to check it out. I was greeted with a gorgeous and intuitive interface, and the developers really show that they put a lot of work into crafting such a nifty little photo app.

On the main screen, you can see the camera input, as well as a strip at the bottom with the 20 special effects included in Instabooth. The strip provides you with a live preview of the effect, so you can see what your picture will end up like before selecting it. Some of the effects can be adjusted by gestures and sliders, which are really intuitive. Most of the ones that are adjustable are like Bulge, Fisheye, Twirl, and the like. Readjust the center of the effect, and move it around – you’ll end up with some wacky results.

While other apps may have the same features, they may not let you import photos you already have on your device. Luckily, Instabooth has that covered too! You can even switch between the front and back camera, toggle flash, and even have a countdown so you can prep your photo (just like on Apple’s Photo Booth).

Once a photo is snapped, you get to see the photo. There are some options too, such as saving to the Camera Roll, copying to clipboard, sharing (email, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), and even opening in another third party app. What I like about the app, though, is the fact that you can quickly export your Instabooth photo into Instagram with the small camera icon adjacent to the Share button. Once it goes into Instagram, you can apply those filters and then share your quirky photo with your friends on the photography social network.

The app is simple, yet fun. It’s definitely a nice photo booth alternative since Apple decided to not include the iPhone 4S in the Photo Booth family.

If you are looking for an elegant yet fun app for photos, then give Instabooth a try. It certainly makes a great companion for Instagram, at the very least.
