Millennium Development Goals Report 2011

The Millennium Development Goals Report 2011 was launched in Geneva by the Secretary-General on 7 July 2011. The report, which presents the yearly assessment of global progress towards the MDGs, shows that although significant strides have been made, reaching all the MDGs by 2015 remains challenging because progress has failed to reach the most vulnerable. Millennium Development Goals Progress Chart 2011

Most of the targets included in the Millennium Development Goals framework are to be achieved by 2015 promising clear and measurable improvements from standards prevailing in 1990. The MDGs break down into 21 quantifiable targets that are measured by 60 indicators. We compile and disseminate global statistical information, develop standards and norms for statistical activities, and support countries’ efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. We facilitate the coordination of international statistical activities and support the functioning of the UN Statistical Commission as the apex entity of the global statistical system. The 43rd session of the Commission will be held from 28 February to 2 March 2012 at UN Headquarters in New York. The annotated Provisional agenda has now been posted.

As in past years, two special seminars will be organized: The Friday Seminar on Official Statistics will take place on Friday, 24 February 2012, with the theme: "Counting the 7 Billion: The Future of Population and Housing Census". Global Geospatial Information Management (GGIM)

The United Nations jointly organised with the government of the Republic of Korea a number of meetings on Global Geospatial Information Management (GGIM). Following ECOSOC's decision to establish a new intergovernmental body, the UN Committee on Global Geospatial Information Management held its inaugural meeting on 26th Oct. 2011. Also, for the first time at the global level, 350 experts from about 90 Member States met in a High Level Forum on GGIM (24-26th Oct.).

The Bureau of the Statistical Commission has recommended that World Statistics Day should be observed every five years. The next World Statistics Day will, therefore, be celebrated in 2015. The 2010 World Statistics Day was an overwhelming success. The Commission in its 43rd session in 2012 will give guidance on the organization of the 2015 celebration.
