who pays for a flyover?
College football season started a few weeks ago here the United States. This is a time of eternal hope and high expectations for the fans of these teams. Of course at the end of the season there’s only one remaining–the National Champion.
Before virtually all college football games, the National Anthem of the U.S. is played, and on many occassions, a ‘fly-over’ of aircraft will take place, which can be a U.S. Air Force F16, a stealth bomber, or another kind of aircraft. These flyovers are very low, and are often timed to coincide with the exact ending of the National Anthem which is very dramatic.
At a recent game I attended, I got to wondering who actually pays for the fly-overs that take place over college football stadiums?
Apparently, it is viewed as both a training exercise and recruiting tool by the military. The link below provided me some very helpful information to learn more about this.

This article states that there are over 850 military flyovers approved annually. That’s a lot! I’m glad they allow this–it always gets the crowd energized and feeling proud about our military.

Costa Rica is another place that most folks wont know what a “flyover” is….nor will they understand why it energizes folks. No military since 1948. Different mindset here.

It never occurred to me who paid for the military aircraft. College Football is just the tip of it, every NFL game also.

I would have never guessed that 850 flyovers are approved per year, very interesting.
I wonder how much money it costs per flyover?
Always looking forward to more

It is so funny – as I started reading your blog post I stopped a moment and thought “I wonder who pays for those flyovers?” I guess with all the ceiling debt debate and the U.S. debt being a popular subject these day I have become hyper sensative to government spending.
I love college football – though all the team I root for suck. But it is still a very exciting sport.
Very interesting little fact! I always wondered how the Rose Parade paid for the Blue Angels.

I love your posts about college football. This is my favorite time of the year. I remember a flyover done at the Orange Bowl a few years ago when my college team was playing. It was after dark so we didn’t see them coming but boy did we see and hear them when they flashed by. It was totally awesome! My team won too which made it even better.
I am a bit worried about all of the current conference meltdowns and realignment. The college football landscape will look very different over the next few years.

Hi Bill,
I do like that happens at Football games. Because most US hockey rinks are now indoor rinks, we don’t get to enjoy such wonderful military recruiting and showmanship during a college hockey game. *hien*

I have not witnessed many flyovers. But, the few that I have been under were very dramatic.
I never really thought about the plane after it passes the field. Thanks for sharing.

I’m a big fan of Military Aviation and Fighter Jets. Especially during an electrifying College or NFL football game. I see them every day and it never gets old.
