So back when I was, oh, 80 percent done with Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton, I gave a call to Aaron (DJ White Owl) Handelman, my friend and the former MC of the early-2000s hiphop foursome, Bad Ronald. “This might sound dumb,” I said, “but I’m doing this book on Walter Payton and I thought it might be cool …”
I didn’t get to finish. “To have a song?” he said. “I’m on it!”
A couple of weeks later, Aaron called me up. “To me what you think,” he said, before unleashing the first few lines of “Sweetness.” (here’s some footage of him recording the tune) I was blown away, especially by the Refrigerator Perry line. The guy has serious skills, and the finished product—to me—is a work of art. We’re not trying to win a Grammy here, but I believe the song perfectly captures something about Walter Payton.
Enjoy—and feel free to download it for free below.
