Meditations on Unitarian Universalist Spiritual Heroes
What Unitarian Universalist Spiritual Heroes do you admire? Why?
Spiritual heroes draw us along the path of spiritual growth: the difference between what we're doing today and our highest ideals and values.
Mary White Ovington: I admire Mary White Ovington for her work in promoting racial equality and justice, her strong sense of truth as a liberating force and her work with Dr. DuBois in starting the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). She was a Unitarian, living her values out in the world.
Lewis McGee: I admire McGee for his persistence and risk-taking: for his sticking the foot inbetween the door the Unitarian practice (nope, no African American ministers for integrated or predominantly white congregations for forty years) and Unitarian principle (justice and equality are two human rights), drawing the denomination along the path of spiritual growth.
Hosea Ballou: I admire Ballou for his work expanding the understanding of the Holy's love to include all people; also, "we need not think alike to love alike."
