On the Move

This weekend was an eventful one for #OccupySF, leading off with a pop-up occupation and General Assembly in the Castro. We had our weekly peaceful march through downtown on Saturday in support of Bradley Manning and in celebration of our three month anniversary. Justin Herman Plaza was heavily guarded so campers convened after the march in Sue Bierman Park. The park was cleared by police, who arrested former Army corporal Nick Shaw.

Just a few hours later, early Sunday morning, authorities took advantage of our reduced numbers at 101 Market to clear out the remnants of camp there. We were able to save the info table but lost the territory. Sunday, occupiers visited Mayor Ed Lee’s open house at City Hall. On Monday protesters were told “no hanging out” in front of 101 Market, even after they had identified themselves as protestors making a political statement. Three arrests were made under sit/lie law.

SFPD is occupying 101 Market and Justin Herman Plaza. The people of Occupy SF are spread across the city and beyond to Occupy Berkeley. Occupy SF State has room for displaced campers and invites Occupy SF to a special General Assembly at Malcolm X plaza at 8pm tonight, Monday Dec 19th.

Occupy SF looks forward to Tuesday evening’s 6pm general assembly, and as always you are invited to join in. We will begin assembling at 101 Market St.

City Harassment Continues

Early morning Sunday December 11, police raided Occupy SF’s small tent-free camp at 101 Market St and made over 50 arrests. Coming on the heels of midweek raids clearing Justin Herman Plaza, and Saturday’s peaceful march in the name of human rights, it is difficult to believe the city’s assertions that these raids are justified.

Occupy SF community intends to continue its peaceful, law-abiding protests regardless of illegal acts of intimidation and arrest. We would like to remind the members of the SFPD that it is within the terms of their contracts, within their rights, and part of their duty under international law to refuse illegal orders.

Occupy SF thanks the people of San Francisco for their continued solidarity, support, and donations in the face of blatant political repression. We would like to remind our supporters that there are ways to come out in solidarity without risking arrest or beatings.

In a series of small nighttime raids, the city of San Francisco removed the camps on Market St and fenced off the areas where they had been.

We have reclaimed 101 Market Street,  the site of the Federal Reserve Bank.

This location has special significance as the San Francisco Occupy began at 101 Market St

Why are we protesting the Fed?

Well,  the Fed is a private institution.

It lacks transparency.

It is not accountable to the public.

It wields enormous power given that it prints our money.

In late November 2011, it became public knowledge that the Federal Reserve secretly loaned $7.77 trillion to Big Banks.

This is while millions of people lost their homes, their jobs and live without adequate healthcare.

The banks got bailed out, we got sold out.
