Facilitate A Class

Click here to apply on-line to become an EXCO facilitator and create your first class, *AFTER* reading the submission guidelines below

Haga click aquí para aplicar a enseñar una clase de EXCO, *DESPUÉS* de leer la información siguiente (haga click aquí para la información en español)

EXCO is always looking for new facilitators. Think about becoming a facilitator and contact us with ideas or questions. Also, read about past teachers' experience.

Classes may take place anywhere around the Twin Cities, we strongly encourage you to find space in your neighborhood such as at your local library, community center, coffee shop, conference rooms, etc. We are also glad to help you brainstorm spaces or reserve space for you on college campuses where we have chapters (currently this is doable at Macalester and the U of M).

EXCO classes open seasonally, with new classes beginning to start up in September, February, and June, but the best time for classes to begin is what works for you and those who will be taking them. Most classes run between 3 and 12 weeks meeting once a week for 2 hours, though again that is open to your desires and experiments!

Please check the web site for application deadlines. You can always submit a class, anytime, but we do have deadlines for class budgets and space reservation. Questions? Contact us. We look forward to talking to you!

WHAT IS EXCO?

The Experimental College (EXCO) is a collective of Experimental Colleges in the Twin Cities that share common visions for a better world and offer free and open classes to the public. EXCO strives to offer Twin Cities’ communities the opportunity to teach or learn in a space open to alternative education and all kinds of knowledge, particularly those that have been historically marginalized. At EXCO, everyone can teach or take classes, and all classes are free.

Important Information:

• Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, apply early to ensure consideration of your budget request. If necessary, some budgetary preference may be given to classes that most fulfill EXCO’s mission and values and that are most likely to be successful.

• Courses are approved based on available funding/space and must meet our basic statement of anti-oppression.

• We will confirm receipt of your application by email and follow up letting you know if your class is approved and the resources we can provide. We will work with you the best we can to provide for your course even if we cannot meet your full budget request.

• Please note that honorariums and unused budgets may be cancelled if a minimum participation (in general, classes should have at least 5 students) is not reached so as to best use our limited resources.

• Statement of Liability: EXCO is an open space for all knowledge. The views expressed in EXCO classes do not necessarily represent the views of the Experimental College. Individuals are responsible for their own actions.

Obligations for facilitators:

• Attend Facilitator Forum (the date will be posted on our web site) in order to meet fellow teachers, organizers, and participants, receive supply money, and coordinate logistics for the course (all facilitators are encouraged to come, this event is mandatory for all new facilitators and all facilitators requesting funds)

• Inform a facilitator liaison of any course changes including time, space used (especially if using campus classrooms) or if you need more resources.

• Collect participant information including email addresses and send it to us: excotc@gmail.com.

• Do a follow up evaluation with participants at the end of the class (we will provide an evaluation form for your course).

• Help us create and sustain the larger EXCO community: please announce all EXCO events (EXCO Nights, skillshares, facilitator workshops, etc.) in your classes and we hope you will attend!

Questions? Contact excotc@gmail.com or call (651) 998-9268

The information in the box below will be placed on the EXCO Website.

Clarifications regarding that information include:

  * You don’t have to list info you don’t want to appear on the website, your phone number, for example
  * Your descriptions should be a maximum of 300 words and might include workload, skills to be covered, prerequisites, etc.
  * Classes must meet a minimum of 3 meeting times,
though if you would like to do a shorter class/workshop see the EXCO workshop application, or contact EXCO at excotc@gmail.com to discuss an exception.  Classes can begin/end at any point during the season.
  * During the summer session we have less resources to offer classes and shorter classes tend to be more successful.
  * Regarding finding spaces: it is best to find a space that suits your classes’ ideal population and necessary spatial requirements. This typically means that you should find space OFF CAMPUS. We will send you a list of organizations with which we have a relationship when we send you the course approval email so that you can schedule the space. Also, feel free to take advantage of other spaces in your community or find spaces that would well suit your needs. It is also possible for us to try to secure space at Macalester or the UMN campus, however space is not guaranteed and certain types of spaces cannot be reserved.
  * Regarding publicity: Successful EXCO courses are ones where teachers have done outreach through their connections and in their communities! We will publicize the course through various means and can help to promote the course through our connections, but we expect facilitators to utilize personal networks and work to publicize their own classes as well.
  * If you are interested in proposing a potential class on the website, we have a listing category for classes that will start once they gather enough interest (“When enough sign up”). Let us know if you would like your class to be listed this way.

Outreach: We at EXCO do all we can to let people know about your class, but you are your own best advocate. We can work with you to create an outreach plan to help make your class a success.
Planning: Think about your students, the time, space, and amount of work that would be best for everyone when planning your class.
Honorariums: Teachers are volunteers. However, we are committed to providing honorariums for those who couldn’t teach without. If you wish to apply for an honorarium we strongly suggest that you submit your application as soon as you are able.
Money: You will receive any supply money that you’ve requested at the facilitator forum before classes start. Honorariums will be received with the completion of the class.

Class Budget Approval

While we generally have sufficient funding, budgetary constraints may need us to limit classes by the following attributes of the class, and how it promotes or exhibits the following ideals:

1: Social justice
2: Likelihood of Success
3: Building bridges between campus and community
4: Experimental
5: Need and Community Need
