MedWest Health System adds new wide-bore MRI

8/19/2011

SYLVA, N.C. – MedWest Health System patients who need MRIs can now have a more comfortable experience during their scans, thanks to a new state-of-the art imaging system.

The new wide-bore MRI system, which goes online Aug. 26 on the MedWest-Harris campus, offers exceptional image quality, advanced applications and increased patient comfort. The extra-wide opening is more accommodating, especially to larger individuals and those prone to claustrophobia. It’s the only wide-bore MRI in the region west of Asheville.

“This is a great addition for us,” said Jacky Bradley, Director of Radiology for MedWest Health System. “We are expanding our capabilities with this new system, and will be able to serve a portion of the population that until now we haven’t been able to serve with the traditional MRI.”
The wide-bore MRI provides 28 inches of inner diameter space compared to 23 inches on traditional MRI equipment with up to one foot of headroom. In addition to greater ease for patients, the new system also produces images that are sharper and more detailed, resulting in a more definitive diagnosis.
“We are very excited to have the most up-to-date MRI technology,” said Dr. Martha Anderson, radiologist at MedWest-Harris. “This magnet allows faster scan times with increased resolution.”

With the addition of the new unit, MedWest Health System now offers four MRIs on its campuses in Sylva and Clyde.

The public can get a first look at the new wide-bore MRI during a ribbon-cutting and open house at 4 p.m. Aug. 24 on the first floor of Harris Medical Park, 98 Doctors Drive. Call 586-7350 for more information.

MedWest Health System provides healthcare for the people of western North Carolina at MedWest-Harris, MedWest-Haywood and MedWest-Swain hospitals, the outpatient facility MedWest-Franklin, and through the 100-member MedWest Physician Network. MedWest is affiliated with Carolinas HealthCare System.
