Google and Apple Lower CPC

Big news. Google and Apple both lowered their CPCs today. I think hearing of Facebook entry to the mobile space really got them worried, after all who but Facebook will allow for DEMOGRAPHIC targeting on mobile!

I always thought price floors on traffic sources we’re dumb. Marketers are already trying their best to maximize eCPM and bid aggressively to earn more traffic, all you’re doing by creating a floor is increasing surplus and reducing fill rate for publishers you work with.

Last time a price floor hurt a company was MyAds as Nickycakes so eloquently demonstrated with basic economic graphics (scroll to bottom)

What to make of all this?

Mobile inventory is growing at a faster pace than advertiser can keep up. In other words supply is greater than demand and a whole world of opportunity for savvy affiliates to capitalize on cheap traffic.

Mobile Affiliate Success Story

One of the most rewarding parts of running an affiliate network is watching an affiliate go from “dabbling” in mobile to really getting the hang of it. One affiliate I want to put the spotlight on is Rohail Rizvi.

I met Rohail at Ad:Tech where he mentioned he was doing some mobile so I invited him to join MobAff. Like most affiliates Rohail wasn’t a believer in mobile at first. Here are just some mental issues that he had to get over.

1. Unlike FB or Google, mobile isn’t dominated by one player you can’t just run on one ad network

2. There are other awesome traffic sources BESIDES JumpTap (in fact JumpTap will out your campaigns)

3. Stop worrying about what offers everyone is KILLING and find something YOU can kill

4. Mobile is harder than most traffic sources but at the same time ripe with opportunity

5. Carriers and Handset Type can make or break your campaign in a BIG way

Rohail tested a few of the offers on the network per our recommendations but wasn’t getting the volume he wanted until he picked up an offer that had potential but was yet untested by us. 5 Things I Learned From Mr Green

As many of you know I’ve had the privilege of knowing Mr Green. I remember when I first heard his name uttered in the Tracking202 house about some new affiliate who went from knowing jack to hitting ridiculous numbers in a short time.

Over the years I got to know the man, the legend and discovered exactly what makes him tick. And no it’s not tequila although he LOVES tequila shots.

Here are 5 things I learned from him that I think is vital to thriving in affiliate marketing:

Hide Yo Shit – To say Mr Green is paranoid is an understatement. How can you blame him though when you’re running a campaign that can amass a million in profit in less than a year everyone is going to want a piece, not just copy cat affiliates.

Yes traffic sources and even your favorite affiliate networks are all greedy little bitches who will sacrifice long term partnerships for short term gains. Make sure you trust all parties you work with and sometimes its better not to scale to that hot traffic source everyone uses for the sake of longevity of your campaign.

Is It Worth It - Another thing that separate Mr Green from the rest of affiliates is he doesn’t bother with things that can’t scale. Most affiliates are so happy just to make something work, but selling “How to Raise Pot Belly Pigs” ebooks, no matter how sick your ROI, is never going to make you serious money.

Mr Green always reminds me to keep my eyes on the prize, whatever it may be. If your goal is to make money remember whether you’re peddling some tiny niche or a bigger niche you’re going to have to work either way, make sure to work on things that can scale.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff - Did you know I owe Mr Green 1,500 bucks… the check is in the mail I swear He doesn’t hassle me over it because he doesn’t sweat the small stuff. If you’re the type who will spend 2 hours on customer service to dispute a 10 dollar charge on your CC then you’re the type that DOES sweat the small stuff.

The goal is to make more money. If you’re wasting time worrying about small money like a failed $50 campaign test then you’re going to lose focus and get the case of “the fears” in you. When you market from a place of fear you make dumb mistakes and can quickly spin out of control sending you further into the red, like a gambling addict.

If you mess up or lose money don’t sweat it and move on..

Work In Productivity Bursts - I hate being friends with Mr Green on FB sometimes because he is a true jet setter. He travels all over the world hopping from exotic location to exotic location. I couldn’t figure out how the hell he gets any work done so I flat out asked him…

His secret is his travel. When he travels he breaks his routine, no TV, no friends, no girlfriend, no family nothing to do but work and play. One can only play so many hours of the day so you go out enjoy your location then come home and work. I like his methodology a lot more than the usual most of us do of grinding all hours of the night losing focus, making mistakes, and burning out.

How to Be a True Bawse – In our industry there is a lot dick swinging going around with everyone trying to one up each other with jewelry, cars, etc. The best part about Mr Green is he doesn’t perpetuate this lifestyle and “gansta” mentality when it comes to money.

Just because you have it doesn’t mean you have to flaunt it. The reason why we all do this is to enjoy freedom and when you start to focus on impressing others you lose sight of that and you go from wage serfdom to another more insidious serfdom of superficiality.

2012 Year of Mobile Affiliates

2012 is brewing to be a perfect storm for mobile affiliates. Millionnaires will be made, here are 3 reasons why affiliate marketing is going to blow up in a big way.

• Supply outgrowing demand – While traffic sources like search, and to some degree social have stagnated, mobile is growing fueled by smart phone adoption and faster mobile data transfers. Fortunately for us affiliates this means traffic will remain cheap while big brands and agencies struggle to make sense of mobile.
• Opportunities galore – If you’re a copy cat affiliate you’re going to miss the boat on this one. Affiliates who get creative will stand to profit handsomely. Some opportunities include tracking, traffic sources, app development, and more arbitrage opportunities than even a black hat could dream of.
• Fragmented traffic – Unlike search (dominated by google) or social (dominated by Facebook) mobile is still very fragmented with dozens of self serve ad networks. In addition there is a ton of different ad types out there including display, push, interstitials, incentivized, and more!
