Chord Overstreet has been handed the option to return to Glee for season three, despite recent reports suggesting he had been axed from the show. While it remains true that Overstreet wasn’t promoted to a series regular with Darren Criss, the actor has been invited to continue as a recurring character, according to TVLine.com.
Glee fans reacted angrily to news that creator Ryan Murphy has decided against offering Chord a permanent deal, but a source close to the show revealed, “His option to be a series regular was just not picked up at this time. If Chord wants to appear on Glee, the choice is his. The Glee writers like his Sam character, and have plans to write for him”. The insider claims the actor and his representative have been told that he is welcome back for a third season and are currently awaiting his response. The source also points out that the recently promoted Harry Shum Jr took “two years to become a regular” adding, “If Chord has a great season, which we expect he will, then he will become a regular like Harry, possibly as early as January”.
Actor and musician Chord Overstreet became an immediate fan favourite on Glee after making his debut as ‘Sam Evans’ in the show’s second season.

Gleeks may have seen the last of Sam Evans.
While Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr.,(who play Blaine and Mike on Glee, respectively) will reportedly be upgraded to full-time series regulars this fall, Chord Overstreet will not be returning.
Say it ain’t so, right?
Sorry, we can’t.
At this time, Fox has not picked up Overstreet’s option to return as a series regular, though the door will be left open for him to appear occasionally as a guest, sources tell Deadline.com. The network did not immediately return E! News’ request for comment, but the heartthrobby actor-singer himself shed some light on the situation:
“Well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh,” he tweeted Friday.
Meanwhile, that’s not the only New Direction Glee may be taking soon.
News of Overstreet’s ousting comes on the heels of Ryan Murphy’s recent announcement to Ryan Seacrest that many of the musical show’s main characters will graduate by the end of season three (which could mean no more Rachel, Finn and Quinn, to name just a few).
But all is intact for now, at least. The heart of the cast, including Overstreet, is currently on tour in Ireland.
