Fast Planet These Hills + Columbus

When you think of the word “tastemaker” a lot of things might come to mind. Someone who scours blogs, bandcamp, and the likes to find the best in unheard music, someone who goes to shows and picks up on that 8:30pm opener that is going to be the next big thing, and a million different descriptions in between. For me, when I think of the word “tastemaker” one undeniable name/force comes to mind. That name of course, is EJ Friedman of Loudersoft. An indie music vet catching on to so many acts very early on, currently managing the instant sensation, Future Unlimited, and always giving special attention to his hometown heroes in Memphis, TN, EJ just knows what’s up.

The latest project brought to my attention by EJ is the fantastic lovechild that is little bit of Discovery and a lot of DNTL and the Postal Service, who call themselves Fast Planet.

I don’t really want to say to much about Fast Planet because three seconds in, you’ll already be hooked. The opening of “These Hills” has the same effect as The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.” An opening that draws you in with this air of infatuation. With lyrics like, ‘In these hills we have our fill of being open / so we await the shallow grave you’re offering,” the band is able to provide a depth to their music that keeps them from being lumped in with the “Las Vegas techno” scene, and more in-line with 90s experimental electro-pop crowd, complete with fuzzy new-wave vibes and soft-spoken Imogen Heap/auto-tune-esque vocals. The more you listen to Fast Planet’s Jes, the more you are able to feel the moodiness of the record, subtle nuances become more apparent, and you start to understand the elements that make Fast Planet an illuminated star among a sea of mediocre twinkling dots.

Fast Planet’s EP Jes is out February 21st. Buy is from their bandcamp HERE.
