Leggings, tights: unacceptable substitute for pants

By now you all know that I am cynical and snarky and love to rant about the crimes of fashion that happen all too often here on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. No other fashion crime, not even Crocs, makes me angrier and more disgusted than seeing tights and leggings being worn in the place of pants. Leggings are not pants. I repeat, leggings and tights are not pants, and therefore should never be worn in place of pants unless you are Lady Gaga or Cher circa 1989.

Wearing leggings with just a T-shirt or a short blouse in place of pants is not just a completely trashy and gaudy look — it should also warrant a ticket for indecent exposure. Whether they realize it or not, when girls wear leggings as pants, they are revealing much more than their tacky taste in apparel. They are also practically exposing the entirety of their butts. As a rule of thumb, if the indentation of your butt crack can be seen a mile away,  you shouldn’t be wearing paper-thin apparel as pants. That’s not the worst of it, though. I cannot even count how many times my eyes have been burned by the sight of camel toe. If you don’t know what camel toe is, Google it, but I’m warning you, the images you will see aren’t only NSFW (not suitable for work), they are also NSFL (not suitable for life).

Unfortunately, it gets worse than exposed indentations of butt cracks and camel toe. The only thing worse than people wearing leggings as pants is people wearing tights as pants. Just because tights are labeled as being opaque does not mean they aren’t semi see-through when worn. You would think that people’s common sense to not wear tights as pants would kick in when they can see their underwear completely visible in the mirror, but I guess not. I’m glad that ridiculous things such as dress codes are nonexistent at UNR, but is it really too much to ask to not want to see a bunch of exposed bums on the way to class everyday?

Girls, I know you love your tights and leggings (I do, too), but there are other ways to rock them without selling yourselves short and giving away free shows. The rule to follow when wearing leggings or tights is to make sure that whatever top you are wearing covers your bum. If your bum is exposed, the top is a no-go. Sticking to dresses and tunics will ensure a cute and non-hooker look. I can see how all this may come off as very harsh, but really, if I wanted to walk around and see exposed asses all day, I’d visit a donkey farm.

I have to disagree. I love wearing nothing but leggings on my legs (no girl wears just tights) but perhaps it depends on how tight your butt is. I’ve got nothing to hide ;)

I love wearing tights and leggings as pants. They feel so soft and good. An my butt is really nice and sexy. I love showing off my hot sexy body and I think people who complain about leggings and tights. Are just fat out of shape house wives that have nothing better to do.

It doesn’t matter how hot and sexy you think your legs and butt are, wearing leggings without appropriate butt coverage is tacky (barring the obvious acceptable circumstances like going to yoga class). Women who distastefully bare all, leaving nothing to the imagination are usually flaunting their only redeemable asset or, in the case of Ms. Clarkson, overcompensating for incoherent sentence structure (a problem usually remedied with passage of the third grade).

I have to agree. I think you are right. I love to wear leggings as pants. I think I look better with them than regular pants. I do wear leggings but ALWAYS with the appropriate top, never show my …

Oh no no no no no…! Don’t DISCOURAGE it!!! There’s NOTHING like a hot lady in leggings/tights with a short top. NOTHING. It’s practically the reason I get up every morning! (Male speaking here, obviously.) I think it looks tacky/pointless to wear a LONG shirt with leggings. It’s also tacky if you’ve got a horrid panty-line or something, but if it’s a thong and the leggings fit well (read “nice and tight”), that’s… NICE. If you’re extremely overweight or something, it’s not the most pleasant sight, but I respect a person’s right to wear something comfortable.

We definitely need more hot ladies sporting the leggings-for-pants-with-a-short-top look.

Are you kidding me? Leggings are H.O.T!! I love seeing a woman in leggings. And for the editor to mention Camel-Toe. Yes, some women simply do not know how to wear them properly so yes, pulled tight and sealed is not the way to go. When that does happen the guys notice it first and foremost but I am sure she knows it as well. So in short, Keep the Leggings, and this is from a mans point of view.
