Installation

MsgFiler is an Apple Mail Plug-In. To install MsgFiler, follow these instructions:

Automatic Installation

  1. Double-click on the MsgFiler Installer icon
  2. Follow the on-screen directions for installing MsgFiler

If you have any difficulties installing MsgFiler, follow these instructions to install MsgFiler manually:

Manual Installation

  1. Quit Mail.app
  2. Type Command-Shift-H to open a new Finder window in your Home Directory
  3. Double-click on the Library folder
  4. Double-click on the Mail folder
  5. If a folder called Bundles does not exist, create one
  6. Copy the MsgFilerPlugIn.mailbundle folder into the Bundles folder
  7. Open Terminal.app in Applications/Utilities and type the following commands:
    
    defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles YES
    defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 2 
    
  8. Launch Mail.app

MsgFiler should now be installed. You can open it via the Message menu or by typing Command-9 on the keyboard while in the Mail application.

Instructions

MsgFiler makes moving messages in Mail a snap!

  1. Select messages you wish to move
  2. Choose Move with MsgFiler from the Message menu or type Command-9.
  3. Enter some characters from the mailbox folder name. You can use the space character as a wildcard. For instance, entering “alex” will match any mailbox folder containing those characters.
  4. Type more characters to further filter the results. Searches are case-insensitive. The search will match the entire path to your mailbox folder.
  5. MsgFiler will display a list of mailbox folder matches below. Hit the down-arrow key or click a mailbox folder to select.
  6. Click the Move button or hit Return to move the selected messages into the mailbox folder.

Auto-Complete

The Auto-Complete checkbox determines whether MsgFiler will automatically start searching as you type in the text input field. If unchecked, you must hit the Return key for MsgFiler to search for a mailbox match.

Show Mailbox

When a mailbox is selected in MsgFiler, you can click on the Show button to have Mail open the selected mailbox. This is useful is you want to quickly see messages in a particular mailbox.

Reload Mailbox List

If you have created new mailboxes in Mail, you must instruct MsgFiler to reload its list of mailboxes. To do this, select Reload Mailbox List from the File menu.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

How do I uninstall MsgFiler?
Quit Mail. Remove the MsgFilerPlugIn.mailbundle folder from the ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder.
MsgFiler is taking a long time to file my messages.
Are you filing to a remote folder (IMAP) or a local folder (On My Mac and POP)? Filing to remote folders takes a longer time due to MsgFiler and Mail having to communicate with the remote server.
I get this error, Can’t make current application into type anything (-1700), when I try to file a message
We’ve identified this problem that affects certain users. We’re looking to come up with a bug fix shortly.
