About Egress Studio Press Poetry Books

Egress Studio Press is the publishing imprint of Egress Studio, a graphic design and illustration company in Bellingham, Washington. Since 2000, Egress Studio Press has been dedicated to publishing books by Pacific Northwest poets.

We’re very proud of our poets. Each of them has been chosen for the quality of their work and their endeavors to foster unity and inspiration in the literary community. Each book is described on a separate page on this site, and an introduction to each of the authors can be found on another page.

In the future, we plan to publish two to four new titles each year. We have a couple manuscripts in the works right now, which will be published sometime this fall. You can look for future book release announcements for authors around the Pacific Northwest.

Egress Studio Press books are noted for their beauty, as well as their content. We strive to publish books with a simple, yet elegant design, excellent poetry, and an appearance that gives one the desire to take them off the shelf. The new publications will often have a handmade quality to them, which may be handsewn signatures, letterpress elements, and other special details of the handmade book. The poetry lover knows each book offers something new.

About Egress Studio Press Greeting and Art Cards

Greeting cards are new to Egress Studio Press, and are a good way for you to purchase unique and unconventional cards. You can browse through reproductions of original watercolors, drawings, prints, and photographs of the Pacific Northwest, as well as cards especially for poetry lovers. We'll continue to put up new pages, so when you return, there'll be something new every time.

The photography cards include images used on posters and book covers, as well as volunteer work at the Whatcom Humane Society's Baker Creek Shelter, where Jim Bertolino and Anita Boyle have taken literally thousands of photos of over four hundred animals up for adoption. We share some of these special animals in a greeting card format, and pass on 20 % of the proceeds to our local Humane Society. Our seasonal card selection focuses on holidays and celebrations. The poetry cards are often accompanied with an illustration or photograph.

About the Collection of Broadsides, Rare Books and Magazines

If you know James Bertolino, one of the first things that amazes you is his knowledge of contemporary poetry and small literary presses. He has been engaged in the literary community for over forty years! He knows details about poets and publishing that would surprise almost anyone. The rare and out-of-print poetry books and magazines on this site come from his personal collection, including early editions of small press poetry magazines and fine art quality letterpress broadsides and books. If you are looking for a rare poetry book or classic literary magazine, send us an email, and we'll check the collection.

Fine Art Originals by Anita K. Boyle

I hope to have much more original artwork up on this website, so people can see what's happening here at Egress Studio. Right now, there are a couple pages of watercolor portraits and assemblages. I'm busy working on another page full of prints, and am beginning to think I should put it up as I go. We'll see how it goes.

Here's the first print on the upcoming page. This is a wood engraving, which uses an odd looking tool called a graver instead of the small chisels used on wood block prints. The gravers I use are especially designed for carving on end grain wood. I hope to be making another engraving very soon. Then I can use them in a one-poem book I've been working on, which will be handbound and illustrated.
