Thermal Bridge Calculations
Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
With the introduction of the revised Building Regulations Part L 2010, the calculation and assessment of thermal bridge performance will have greater impact than ever before. Linear thermal bridges and associated Ψ (Psi) Values previously inserted by default, are now required to be accurately calculated.
Under Appendix K of the approved SAP 2009 document Part L1A Section 5.12, there are 3 methods by which thermal bridges can be entered into the calculation:
A. All detailing conforms with Accredited Construction Details or another Government-approved source involving independent assessment of the construction method.
B. Performance values have been calculated by a person with suitable expertise and experience in accordance with BR 497 (Conventions for calculating linear thermal transmittance and temperature factors), but have not been subject to independent assessment of the construction method. In this case the values are increased by 0.02 or 25%
C. If neither of the above applies use y = 0.15, (which roughly equates to over 50% increase in the heat loss through a junction)
Therefore, in order to receive the maximum benefit for each detail it must be assessed by competent/Accredited Persons and registered with an Accredited Construction Details scheme.
Stroma Technology has an experienced internal team of Thermal Modellers, able to model both simple and complex details in 2 and 3 Dimensions. Using the industry leading Heat 2/3D software package details can be modelled and Thermal Bridge values and temperature factors created.
