This personal photo collection shows my journey to womanhood – from my parents’ firstborn son Charles in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Janet, the embodiment of the person I was destined to be.

Just a few months ago, my childhood photos brought me pain – so much so that I made my mom keep them in a box in the back of our storage closet. Now, they bring me joy to see how far that little kid from Kalihi has come.

I no longer split myself by my life in genders. All I see is the totality of me.
