Chairperson's Message!

Joan
Greetings. I hope you are enjoying the so far snowless winter and that 2012 is off to a wonderful start for you. At the Switchboard, we are all busy preparing for our major fundraising event of the year CARNIVALE a festive party at Thatched Cottage on Friday, March 9th featuring buffet, prizes and dancing to the beats of DJ SpinDetta. It is the only party where you get to guess Who is behind that mask? See link at the top of this page regarding details and ticket information. Tickets are going fast, so order yours today, then select a mask and well see you on Friday the 9th for a spectacular evening.

Elsewhere, Id like to express our sincere gratitude to all the people who responded to our Holiday Letter with their donations. The generosity of the community is what will help the Switchboard flourish in these difficult economic times. All of us at the Switchboard are grateful to know our supporters are out there. That being said, we are so honored that the Community, via Outlook Long Island magazine, has again voted us winner of the Outlook Award for Best Health & Human Services Organization for the third time in four years!

I would like to also emphasize our ongoing need for phone volunteers. It is a unique way to give back to the community and work with a thoughtful and friendly group of people. Many people do not realize two aspects about volunteering with GLSB. One, you do not have to possess counseling experience. We are peer counselors, which means supportive listeners, and we fully train new volunteers for this role. Secondly, with the expected commitment of just two shifts per month, the requirement of your time is relatively small. If you are interested in volunteering, click on the Contact Us link at the top of this page, and complete the form.

Our Resources page has a new look and is now easier to navigate. We are still updating resources all the time, so let us know if you would like to add your resource or change an existing one. Lastly, with recent cancellation of our PayPal account, donations can be made by check for now and mailed to our PO Box 1312 Ronkonkoma NY 11779.

Sincerely with respect and pride,

Joan Bloodgood

Gay & Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island,
History and Mission Statement

The Gay & Lesbian Switchboard of Long Island provides peer counseling and information services for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities of Long island and it's surrounding areas. The GLSB was founded in 1991, in an attempt to educate and empower the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities on Long Island. It had grown over the past 16 years, into one of the largest continuously running Gay and Lesbian switchboards in New York State.

spacer The Switchboard volunteers are here to listen regardless of the reason for the call (coming out, dating, in a relationship, starting over or experiencing one of life's many unexpected twists). The GLSBLI is a service that provides the caller with the opportunity just to talk, express feelings and hopefully feel a little better by the time the call is finished.

The Switchboard also provides callers with information and referrals to the professional and business community as well as social groups, organizations, and upcoming community events. We strive to maintain the most up-to-date listing of bars, clubs, social organizations and various other gay friendly references ranging from attorneys to therapists to retailers and restaurants.

Notable distinctions include: voted Outstanding Overall Service Organization by the GLBT community in 1996. Recognized for our efforts every year by the Long Island Ravens, as well as chosen as Grand Marshall group to the Long Island Pride Parade in 1998. Our infomational and peer counseling services have assisted over 25,000 callers since 1991.
