Inauguration of Science and Technology Park, University of Girona (UdG)

The Science and Technology Park of Girona is a project developed at the initiative of the University of Girona, with funding from the City, the county council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Employers of Girona, with the goal of becoming the principal agent economic development in the Girona area, promoting and facilitating research and its transfer to the business. Construction on a surface of 73,000 square meters donated by the City Council, involves an investment of 50 million euros and is expected to close in the second half of 2009.

Work by architects and Estanislao Noguero & Barbara Puig, will house its 9,000 square meters in some of the leading research groups at the University, institutions and agencies in Girona and concentrate the services related to applied research and knowledge transfer with university groups to companies.

The park will feature five buildings: the Center for Underwater Robotics Research (CIRS), a Business Center (GIROEMPRÉN), a Center of New Food Technologies (CENTA), Research Institutes and Innovation of the Tourist Industries and the Digital Imaging and Multimedia Production and Research in Visualization and Virtual Reality (Narcis Monturiol building), and the headquarters of the Catalan Agency of Water Research (ICRA).

Don Juan Carlos was accompanied by Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade Joan Clos. Upon arrival at the Science and Technology Park, University of Girona, His Majesty was received by President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, José Montilla, Minister of Education and Science, Mercedes Cabrera, the delegate of the Government in power in Catalonia and subdelegado in Girona, Francesc Busquets Francisco, the mayor of Girona, Anna Pagans, and the rector of the University, Anna Maria Geli.

He agreed then to King inside Jaume Casademont building where he was greeted by the directors of Territorial Policy and Public Works for Innovation, Universities and Enterprise, and Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Joaquim Nadal, Josep Huguet and Marina Geli, respectively , President of the Diputación de Girona, Enric Vilert, the bishop of Girona, Carles Soler, Commissioner for Universities and Research of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Blanca Palmda, the president of the Social Council of the University, Albert Bou, Vice President University Science Policy Foundation and patron of Science and Technology Park, Miquel Duran, manager of the University and Trustee of the Park Foundation, Josep Solé, president of the Governing Board of the Park Foundation, Tomàs Sobrequés, and general director of the Park Foundation, Pere Condom.

At the end, His Majesty went to the Park Board Room, where he signed in the Book of Honor and was greeted by Ruhi Teresa, widow of Jaume Casademont.

After meeting with the King Center researchers, the rector of the University offered words of thanks, which concluded Juan Carlos unveiled a commemorative plaque.
