Irish-Rockers WHISKEY OF THE DAMNED at Stickyz Thursday, Jan. 12

Posted by kstar on January 11, 2012 | Category: coming to stickyz | Leave a Comment

This is gonna be a super-fun (and rowdy) one, folks! Whiskey of the Damned, a five-piece Celtic-influenced rock group, comes all the way from Milwaukee to Stickyz Rock ‘N’ Roll Chicken Shack to headline a show on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The band, founded by Ireland native Eoin McCarthy, is a fast-rising group of talented musicians dedicated to playing high-energy, raucous concerts filled with an unmistakable mixture of American and Irish rock.

Whiskey of the Damned is currently recording its second album to be released tentatively this winter and touring throughout the winter and spring, and the band has landed prime spots in festivals such as Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Manhattan, Illinois’ Irish Fest, and Milwaukee’s Irish Fest to name a few. Described as a mix of The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, and Flogging Molly, this act is one you do not want to miss perform live.

spacer Fronted by Eoin McCarthy and Blaine McQuinn, the show never stops. Eoin has been lucky enough to be in a host of other bands and shared bills with or opened for the likes of The Violent Femmes, The Dropkick Murphys, Buckethead, Van Hunt, Gin Blossoms, Dinosaur Jr., Soul Asylum, and Flyleaf. Blaine also plays with one of the foremost country music acts in the Midwest called “The Cathouse Drifters.”

Blaine, an extremely talented musician, plays bagpipes, violin, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo, to name a few. And now featuring Micheal Favaro on the accordion, Shawn Hoffman on bass guitar, and Tim McQuinn on drums, The Whiskey of the Damned’s energy is pretty unstoppable.

Whiskey of the Damned’s show at Stickyz begins at 9 pm and is open to ages 18 and up. Admission is $5 at the door.

Seven-Piece Duke of Uke & His Novelty Orchestra at Stickyz Sunday, Jan. 8

Posted by kstar on January 8, 2012 | Category: coming to stickyz | Leave a Comment

City Beat describes best Stickyz‘ featured band on Sunday, Jan. 8, the Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra:

“In the course of an evening, you’ll hear airy wisps of ’60s Pop sweetness, Tin Pan Alley ham, Blues swagger, Jazz and Ragtime swing, Gospel reverence, Motown Soul and Classical precision, played with technical precision and jammy abandon.”

spacer Energetic and unabashedly romantic, The Duke of Uke & His Novelty Orchestra enchants audiences with witty lyrics, complex vocal harmonies and funky rhythms.

Their infectiously optimistic sound draws from a wide range of influences — from classical composers such as Bach, to Tin Pan Alley ragtime tunes, to elements of Gospel and Motown, to rock and roll artists of the 1960s and ’70s.

The seven-piece band’s unique combination of ukulele, violin, tuba, saxophone, bass, rock drums and latin percussion swing you from sweet to funky with a sound that will remind you of summers gone by, road trips to come, and long-lost friends you’ve never met.

By all indications, this show is going to be a sweet treat for the ears of music fans of all types and all ages.

The News Gazette of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, wrote of the group’s music:

“It’s just plain fun, with memorable melodies and nicely written lyrics that evoke fleeting summer days. … It appeals to a wide range of people, from babies — one once squealed on time and in key to [The Duke of Uke's] music — to punk rockers to baby boomers.”

Sunday’s show at Stickyz begins early, at 8:30 pm, and admission is only $5. The show is open to ages 18 and up.

Come Out of that ‘Fraidy Hole’ for Hosty Duo TONIGHT

Posted by kstar on January 6, 2012 | Category: coming to stickyz | Leave a Comment

Alt-Country singer/songwriter act Hosty Duo returns to Stickyz Rock ‘N’ Roll Chicken Shack on Friday, Jan. 6 for what’s sure to be a fiery, fun show full of rollicking country-rock music and in-your-face, often-hilarious lyrics.

The Hosty Duo’s penchant for catchy songs and high-octane live shows has earned them many accolades over the years, most recently when the Oklahoma City Gazette named them that state’s Best Singer/Songwriter of 2010 and Oklahoma Magazine included Hosty Duo in its short list of the Best Bands of 2010 and named them The Best Band in Oklahoma of 2009.

spacer The Duo has opened for a wide variety of musical acts such as R.L.Burnside, Cedell Davis, T-Model Ford, Hank Williams III, Dick Dale, Marcia Ball, G. Love and Special Sauce, Bo Diddley, BR5-49, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, Roger Cline and the Peacemakers, The Hackensaw Boys, Billy Joe Shaver, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, and, of course, Quiet Riot.

In addition, several songs from their extensive CD catalog have gotten airplay on local stations such as KGOU in Norman, KRXO in Oklahoma City and KRSC in Tulsa — and even overseas in Macedonia, Spain, Belgium, Brazil and the Netherlands.

Wichita, Kansas’ F5 Magazine wrote this in a review of a Hosty Duo show:

“Hosty’s fine, fine guitar lines are one part Roy Buchanan, one part Lowell George (Little Feat) with a sprinkle of Waylon Jennings sprinkled here and there for an extra dash of flavor. He also proved, during heartfelt versions of songs such as “Johnny Cash,” that although he can blaze brave new trails with pick, fingers and ax, his main musical concern is adding rich melodic textures that enhance the song not just bits that will senselessly thrust solos into the spotlight and blow the whole damn machine apart.

It’s also refreshing to hear a lyricist who can write songs about those on the fringe without blistering irony, such as the protagonist in “Applesauce,” whose toothless gal will make you sing, or the loser in love who meets his love in a “Truck Stop Shower Stall” and almost convinces you that it was a good time, despite losing everything. Not that Hosty doesn’t have his edges, which he proved on “I Will Work For Booty” and “Fraidy Hole.”

Hosty writes the kind of songs that should be on the radio, the kind of songs that can be passed from one generation to the next, songs that are timeless, universal. Sure, there’s always the hope that the duo will burst forth from their home in Norman, Okla. and burn up the FM dial.”

The Hosty Duo will perform immediately after the Cotton Bowl featuring the Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Kansas State. There will be no cover for the Hosty Duo show for those who arrive before halftime of the game.

The Hosty Duo show is open to ages 18 & up and admission will be $6.

Stickyz Gives GRACE This Thursday

Posted by kstar on January 4, 2012 | Category: coming to stickyz | Leave a Comment

Memphis native and Americana/alt-country/blues singer/songwriter Grace Askew returns to Stickyz Rock ‘N’ Roll Chicken Shack to headline a show on Thursday, Jan. 5 after wowing the audience there at her last performance in Little Rock.

The touring and performing powerhouse has substantially established herself throughout the Southeast United States and has organized and promoted her own small tours since her teens. Lately, she’s toured as far West as Santa Fe, New Mexico; as far North as Chicago, Illinois; and as far East as Asheville, N.C.

Back home in Memphis, Grace plays a slew of steady gigs with her abundantly talented accompanying five-piece group, The Black Market Goods, made up of all prominent musical figures in the local scene.

spacer National singer-songwriter festivals have also kept her prominently placed in a tight circle of renowned regional writers who have served not only as mentors, but also as staunch patrons of her talent, including Keith Sykes (co-writer of the popular “Volcano” with Jimmy Buffet and “I’m Not Strange, I’m Just Like You” recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker); Grammy-winning writer Richard Leigh; and Austin, Texas’ Larry Joe Taylor, host of the largest privately owned music festival in the South. She has opened for and toured with such prolific singer/songwriters as Sid Selvidge, Rivers Rutherford, Jesse Winchester, Hayes Carll, and James McMurtry.

Grace has released two EPs (Wasted Lipstick and Hawthorne) under renowned produced Pete Matthews, both of which were recorded at Memphis’ famed Ardent Studios.

Her third and newest release Until They Lay Me Down to Rest is the first full-length album to be solely produced and written by Askew. The bulk of the album was recorded by Memphis musical veteran Richard Ford, who is also featured on several tracks playing such various instruments as banjo, lap and pedal steel guitars, and a mandolin offshoot, the “jangletron.”

Critic Bruce Sylvester of Sing Out! Magazine wrote of Grace:

“If Tom Waits had a singer/writer daughter in Memphis, it would be Askew with her gallery of lost souls on the graveyard shift. Gutsy, bluesy, and a bit boozy, she quietly sings with jagged languor and a skewed spirituality. Discreet percussion, guitar and, on occasion, wistful lap steel notes sagely frame her rough-hewn sophistication.”

The Commercial Appeal of Memphis had this to say about her new album:

“Grace Askew has been busy in recent years confounding the expectations of those who see her as just another pretty girl with a guitar. Her music, already a step removed from coffeehouse pabulum thanks to her deep, smoky voice, took a dark, Tom Waits-inspired turn on this haunting full-length debut, featuring excellent contributions from multi-instrumentalist Richard Ford and Askew’s jazz-informed backup band, the Black Market Goods.”

Grace Askew and the Black Market Goods’ show at Stickyz begins at 9 pm and is open to ages 18 & up. Admission is just $5. For more information about Stickyz’ live music performances or its delicious restaurant offerings, call 501-372-7707 or visit www.stickyz.com.

Award-Winning Indie Rocker Benjamin Del Shreve To Headline Stickyz’ NYE Party!

Posted by kstar on December 30, 2011 | Category: coming to stickyz | Leave a Comment

Stickyz Rock ‘N’ Roll Chicken Shack’s New Year’s Eve party this year will feature Fayetteville-based award-winning indie pop-rocker Benjamin Del Shreve and band, with their retro-rock sound, catchy choruses and groovy guitars.

Sync Weekly describes BDS and his band as having “explosive alternative rock riffs and pop melodies that are influenced by equal parts My Morning Jacket and Tom Petty with a touch of funk from James Brown.”

spacer Del Shreve and crew took home the Northwest Arkansas Music Awards last year for Best Rock Band and Best Rock Vocalist, adding to his long list of musical accomplishments.

Del Shreve and his brother, Randall, formerly played and sang in the Christian Rock band GS Megaphone, which was nominated for multiple Dove Awards and American Music Awards before the group disbanded and Del Shreve struck out on his own, turning his focus to making fun, accessible yet introspective indie alt-pop/rock.

The result is, by and large, astoundingly good. Click here to listen to some of his latest album, Sleeping Sweetly, released last year.

Opening on New Year’s Eve will be Belair and a new melodic-pop-rock group, Care Worn, out of Bald Knob, Arkansas.

Care Worn’s lead vocalist and guitarist, Scott Price, won second place in VH1′s Song of the Year songwriting competition in 2005 for the track, “Told You So.” Other members of the band are Mike Martin on drums and Roger Case on bass.

Pop-punk rockers Belair are based in Magnolia, Arkansas, and say their goal is to spread love to all those who are hurting in the world. The band includes Wesley Lewis on vocals, guitar and keyboard, Jameson Burton on guitar, Austin Vanderveer on bass and Tyler Cave on drums and vocals.

Belair’s second EP, “Move,” recorded at Blue Chair Studios, was released this past summer. Turning out to be almost a concept EP, its theme looks at how choosing the wrong paths in life can bring you down, and then encourages the listener to “Move” with authority toward their goals and dreams in life.

Tickets for the Stickyz New Year’s Eve are $15 in advance and are available online now here. The show begins at 9 pm and doors will open at 8. It’s open to ages 18 & up.

For more information about Stickyz’ live music or its extensive restaurant menu, please call 501-372-7707 or visit www.stickyz.com.
