From Molecules to Markets

Tree fruit research and extension at Washington State University extends from molecules to markets. In recent months, WSU researchers have made significant strides with their contributions to the sequencing of apple and peach genomes. These advances in basic science have direct application to ongoing projects by other researchers to develop apple and cherry cultivars specific to the growing conditions of Washington - and that meet the desires of consumers for tasty, health-benefitting fruit.

Decisions, Decisions

Making predictions is difficult - especially about the future. But that's just what fruit producers wrestle with every day. In order to help growers make timely and economically sensible decisions, WSU scientists have parsed a mountain of data on weather and pests. The result? The Decision Aid System and AgWeatherNet - two tools to help orchardists bank against the future.

A Stitch in Time

Understanding that the availability and cost of labor is one of the crucial challenges faced by the tree-fruit industry in Washington, WSU scientists and extension educators are investigating automation and mechanization.
