Implementing Common Core State Standards
in K-14 Classrooms

Capturing Curiosity in Science Through Literacy
Local middle and high school teachers, Lauren Luedtke, Jeff Taylor, Julie King and Julie Blomquist, will describe and demonstrate lessons that guide students to use literacy like scientists. This is the second of a series of three workshops that examine literacy in the disciplines and how teachers can incorporate the Common Core Standards.*
(NOTE: There will be no K-5 offering this month. If there are several elementary teachers committed to attending, we will offer one in April.)
*Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 6–12 (pp. 64-66)
Text Types and Purposes (1) Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content, introducing and supporting claims through logical reasoning and use of relevant, accurate data and evidence Research to Build and to Present Knowledge (7) Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues
Range of Writing (10) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

11:30 a.m. – Panel Discussion
Following the workshop, we will convene a panel of college instructors to discuss writing requirements in the sciences and field questions from the audience.

EMWP Family Literacy Initiative Regional Training Institute

EMWP Family Literacy Initiative will hold its Regional Training Institute on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at EMU. Attached please find a flyer with more information about the event.
The training will be in Room 300 Halle Library and will run from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m

Please join us for this amazing professional development opportunity, Eastern Michigan Writing Projects’s Invitational Summer Institute will be held June 20 – July 19, 2012 and it is open to to teachers from all levels and subject areas. The National Writing Project PD model is focuses on teacher inquiry and reflection and is backed by more that 20 years of research Past participants say that their participation has had more of an impact on their teaching than any other professional development program. Applications are due March 2, 2012.
