Pencils Down

So here we are. One year later. I had no idea it would take me one year to complete this new version of Everomp. Ridiculous, yes. Quite a lot has happened in a year.

For reasons both self-involved and work-related, Everomp kept going on the backburner. Slowly, inch by inch, it finally came to completion. From start to finish I wanted to do something completely different from what I usually find on the Web. Whether or not I succeeded is unanswered, but that was the goal in mind as I designed, coded, tweaked, deleted, redesigned, and finally finished Everomp.

I hope this becomes a place to write, read, and talk about design. I’m very interested in design within our culture, and its role. Design is a very complicated beast. In fact, to simply say “design” doesn’t do it justice. It is visual communication. It is speaking loudly. It is being invisible. It is the process. It is the outcome. It’s all around us. It’s, simply, everywhere. But what is it? I consider myself a designer (graphic), but I claim to know little about its role in society. I want to explore it, and have a little fun along the way.

I’ll admit: I was never, ever good about the content side of things. I was always designing Everomp, but never actually writing. My hope is this will change. Design is nothing without a message to convey. So if you find this site gathering dust, tar and feather me and roll me down a hill. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Big thanks goes out to friends and peers who have supported me along this process, because without them then what’s the point? Thanks Tim Ingram, Marc Rabinowitz, Mark Bixby, Cliff Manspeaker, Bryan Kriekard, Shannon, Mom and Dad. You guys rock. And if I’m forgetting somebody, well they rock too.

A few things left to fix:

  1. Headers. The sIFR technique created graciously by Mike Davidson isn’t quite there yet. I just can’t get it to align properly. You’ll notice the font-size is larger in IE6.
  2. Trackbacks. I’ve never used them before. I don’t know the first thing about them. (Hey, I’ve never claimed to be a programmer) I don’t see a huge need to implement them quite yet since I don’t expect many outside links.
  3. Portfolio. Note quite finished adding to it. There are two more pieces I want to add. Plus I have to update my resume. All due to laziness. I apologize.
  4. I still have a broken link on the top left column. I don’t plan on having an archive page solely for Second Glance links, so I just have to remove the link altogether.
  5. Add comments to “How to Find a Job” article. Importing them from the last version shouldn’t be difficult.
  6. Anything else. I’m sure there are quite a few bugs to squash. I’d rather release Everomp now. If anything it will give me incentive and feedback to take care of any other issues.
  7. IE7. Apparently it’s been released. I don’t have access to it at the moment, and I’m quite sure I’ll have to adjust some things to accomodate it.

If you have any advice to offer on these issues, I’ll gadly accept it. I don’t claim to be an amazing programmer. Hell, I can barely get by on looks alone. Also, I gladly accept constructive criticism. A thick skin is needed in our line of work. It can only help my site.

So here we go. If you never come back, well thanks for the visit. If you do come back, I thank you again.

Clamoring

GREAT job Blake! This design is truly remarkable, and such a giant leap from your previous site. I’m really looking forward to reading it as well. Don’t worry, you’ll hear from me if you’re not posting regularly. ;) Congratulations!

Thanks Mark. I’ve already found a couple bugs…mostly in the Movable Type code. I’m not very educated with MT quite yet.
