Project Mission and Goals
The Mission
To change practices, attitudes and perceptions of apple Integrated Pest Management (IPM) activities while sustaining grower profitability through acceptable crop protection, reducing pesticide exposure risks of farm labor, and enhancing environmental quality, in part driven by the challenges posed by the impending loss of azinphosmethyl (AZM) and international regulations regarding minimum residue limits (MRL's) on fruit.
Our Goals
There are three major goals for the current Apple Integrated Pest Management Transitions Project (AIPMTP):
- Reduce the usage and recommendations of organophosphate (OP) insecticides for pest control in WA apple orchards while increasing the recommendations and use of new IPM practices.
- Increase the use of the WSU-Decision Aid System (DAS), which will improve real-time pest management decisions and assist with IPM adoption.
- Increase knowledge about reduced-risk pesticide safety and IPM practices among year-round and seasonal farm workers in order to increase their awareness of a safer work environment created through the adoption of OP-alternatives.
The above stated goals are to be achieved through educational programs and communication of research-based knowledge. Success towards these goals will be assessed and documented during the course of this project with the results available at the 'Assessment and Documentation' linked page to the left.
The Apple IPM Transition Project is funded through the USDA/WSDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
