CETIS provides a national research and development service to UK Higher and Post-16 Education sectors, funded by the JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee). This includes providing strategic advice to JISC, supporting its development programmes, representing it on international standardisation initiatives, and working with the wider educational community to facilitate the use of standards-based eLearning, especially through Special Interest Groups. We also provide direct support for the JISC eLearning Programme, especially the eFramework and Design for Learning strands.
The service is managed by CETIS at The University of Bolton and partnered by the University of Strathclyde, Heriot-Watt University and The Centre for Recording Achievement.
The e-Learning Focus site provides a route into the e-Learning Programme for the wider community. It reports on its results as they become available, and provides commentary, news and articles to support the work of the projects. The project is also developing the "SOA and eLearning: a Guide for Universities and Colleges" pack, founded on the experience of results of the eLearning programme
CETIS is a member of the consortium involved in the TENCompetence project, a European Framework 6 Integrated Project developing a new infrastructure for competence-based lifelong learning in Europe.
RELOAD is widely acknowledged as the leading open source software system for implementing interoperability standards. The original development of RELOAD was funded by the JISC X4L programme, and supports a range of interoperability standards: IEEE metadata, IMS content packaging, SCORM and IMS Learning Design. RELOAD continues to be developed as an open source system.
This project was funded by the JISC to provide a definition and elaborate the functionality of the PLE concept. Two prototypes were developed as part of the project.
TELCERT was a European Framework 6 project that has developed tools for assisting with compliance to interoperability standards. CETIS contribution was to extend the RELOAD editor to become a general purpose XML schema based specification editor, the Content Re-engineering Tool (CRT).
A European Framework 6 support project, UNFOLD developed and supported communities of practice around the IMS Learning Design Specification that resulted in wider activity around the specification.
LIFE is funded by the EC DG for Education and Culture. Through a series of expert meetings, plugfests and conferences, LIFE has developed recommendations for European action in the field of standards-based eLearning.
