The Milstein Young Investigator Awards

The Milstein Young Investigator Awards are bestowed upon individuals who have made an impact on interferon and cytokine research early in their careers. This year’s Milstein Awards were presented on Sunday, October 9th at the annual ISICR meeting in Florence, Italy.  See www.cytokines2011.it for more information.

International Society of Interferon and Cytokine Research (ISICR) members who attend the Annual Meeting of the ISICR and who have received a Ph.D. or M.D. within the previous 8 years are eligible. Every year up to five awards are granted to individuals who have made notable contributions to interferon and cytokine research, either in a basic or applied field. This award is provided by a generous gift of the Milstein Family.

ISICR members may apply themselves or nominate other members for Milstein Young Investigator Awards.  Senior laboratory advisers are encouraged to have their associates apply. A curriculum vitae and letter of recommendation should accompany the application.

The application deadline for 2011 Milstein Young Investigator Awards has now passed. Applications for 2012 will be available in January, 2012.

Young Investigators to Watch in 2011

Here are some of the emerging scientists in the field of interferon and cytokine research:

Gijs Versteeg, Ph.D.

spacer

Dr. Gijs Versteeg has identified and characterized small-molecules that activate antiviral responses and could someday be used to fight viral infections.

Mehul Suthar, Ph.D.

spacer

Dr. Mehul Suthar is studying how people respond to West Nile Virus infection.

Yueh-Ming Loo (Ming Loo), Ph.D.

spacer

Dr. Ming Loo is studying a possible therapeutic target for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection.

Ole Hammming, Ph.D.

spacer

Dr. Ole Hamming is determining how the protein, Interleukin 21, interacts with its receptor. This protein plays an important role in immune system maturation and function.

Volker Fensterl, Ph.D.

spacer

Dr. Volker Fensterl is investigating a family of proteins that are involved in the host defense against viral infection and how these proteins may function in an organ specific manner.
