As with any language, Javascript has developed a set of idioms. Understanding them is essential to reading typical javascript code, and offers an insight into the realities of writing client-side code on the web.
JavaScript libraries such as Dojo, prototype, script.aculo.us and the Yahoo! UI Library promise to reduce the pain of JavaScript development. What problems do these libraries solve, and how should you go about choosing the right one for your project?

A brief intro (with a few examples) to DOMBuilder, a JavaScript library for creating complex DOM structures easily so you can avoid overusing innerHTML.
Mapstraction is a library which provides a common API for Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft's javascript mapping APIs to enable switching from one to another as smoothly as possible. The aim of Mapstraction in mainly to protect companies building commercial products on top of Google Maps from changes to terms and conditions, the introduction of ads, or the emergence of a competing library with better maps, different imagery or preferable licensing terms. Mapstraction additionally fills some holes in Yahoo and Microsoft's current offerings, bringing them up to speed with Google Maps, and will also talk to OpenStreetMap for people who want to build maps without restrictions on derived works.
I'll be talking through a range of topics on the road to writing your own panning map solution; topics include clipping, moving the map, moving the tiles, tips and tricks, and complex overlays using image maps. All in about 10 minutes too :-).
