Training and Outreach

The Training and Outreach program supports the Government of Indonesia to better prepare for, mitigate and manage its natural hazard risks. This is done by working with BNPB to develop, standardise and deliver training materials to help build the capacity of national and sub-national governments to manage disaster risks. In addition, this Program will develop a range of educational and awareness raising materials to promote disaster risk reduction across Indonesia and the region.

The Training and Outreach program will:

  • Increase the capacity of Indonesian and regional disaster managers to prepare for, mitigate and manage natural hazard risks.
  • Increase the capacity of national and sub-national governments to effectively implement disaster risk reduction practices.
  • Increase public awareness of approaches to, and the need for, disaster risk reduction.

In order to promote a more prepared and coordinated disaster management capability, the Training and Outreach program and the Risk and Vulnerability program will work closely together to ensure maps, skills, knowledge and plans translate into stronger disaster preparedness. The Training and Outreach program will support projects to integrate risk assessments into disaster risk management practices; and promote building back better following natural disasters. The Facility has funded the development of information on safe building practices in West Sumatra:  www.rumahamangempa.net/

The key activity of the Training and Outreach Program has been the launch of the Build Back Better Campaign 2010 following the devastating earthquake in Padang and neighbouring villages in West Sumatra, Septmeber 2009.
