Fri 24 Feb 2012

Proposals for the next Arches LIVE 2012 and Blackbox Graduate Visual Art Award are now being accepted. The deadline is Friday 4th May.

Both awards are just a small part of our ongoing programme of support to talented emergent artists, with Arches LIVE providing an opportunity for theatre and performance artists to showcase brave new work at the festival, and the Blackbox Graduate Award providing visual artists with a financially supported residency in the building – a brilliant chance to gain inspiration by working outside of their normal practice.

FOURTH OVERALL GOLD WIN FOR THE ARCHES AT BEST BAR NONE AWARDS 2011

Wed 9 Nov 2011

Hot on the heels of our SLTN Awards win news earlier this week, we are delighted to announce that we have won the overall gold award at this year’s Best Bar None Awards (Late Opening Venues category) which were held on Tuesday 8th November in Glasgow.

This latest accolade makes it the fourth year in a row that we have won the overall gold award at the Best Bar None Awards.

The Best Bar None Awards Scheme is sponsored by Diageo and recognises venues which demonstrate their focus on public safety and customer care. It was developed in partnership between Strathclyde Police, Glasgow Community & Safety Services, Scottish Late Night Operators Association, Scottish Licensed Trade Association and Glasgow City Centre Alcohol Action Group with a view to creating a safer and more welcoming licensing environment in Glasgow.

ARCHES WINS 'BEST LATE NIGHT VENUE' AT SLTN AWARDS 2011

Fri 4 Nov 2011

We are delighted to announce that the Arches has scooped the coveted title of Best Late Night Venue at this year’s Scottish Licensed Trade News Awards, despite fierce competition.

The judges were unanimously impressed with the venue, highlighting in particular the diverse use of the space. With the Arches celebrating its 21st birthday next year, this serves as a very proud reminder, to both staff and all our customers, of the venue’s revered position – not just in Glasgow, but the whole of Scotland.

We were similarly delighted to be presented with the award by none other than Denise Van Outen

MAY I HAVE THE PLEASURE...? WINS TOTAL THEATRE AWARD

Mon 29 Aug 2011

The Arches is delighted to announce that Artist in Residence Adrian Howells has won the Total Theatre Award for Innovation and Experimentation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011 for his show ‘May I Have the Pleasure…?

The show, which uses Adrian’s personal experience as the best man at 8 weddings and the attendee of nearly 60 nuptials to reflect on his present status as a single gay man in his late forties,  received four star reviews from The Scotsman, Total Theatre and Metro.

Adrian will take up his two year residency with the Arches in September and will continue his work with TouchBase as part of this. TouchBase is one of the country’s most exiting and innovative resources for disabled people, families, carers and the community.

ANCNOC BLACKBOX GRADUATE VISUAL ARTS AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED

Mon 1 Aug 2011

The anCnoc Blackbox Graduate Visual Art Award has announced the winner of this year’s prize as Glasgow School of Art graduate Euan Ogilvie. He will be supported with space and funding by The Arches and will exhibit his work as part of the Arches Live festival of new, emergent work in September 2011.

The award, sponsored for the first time by anCnoc Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is aimed at giving graduates the opportunity to work outside of their normal practice and gain inspiration from the Arches’ multi-artform activity. Euan is a 2011 graduate of the Glasgow School of Art’s BA in Fine Art Sculpture. He has been awarded a residency at the Arches until August 2011, including work space, informal research opportunities and £400 towards the creation or development of work.

Euan will also exhibit his work, The Bystander Effect, in the Arches as part of Arches LIVE from Tue 20th – Sat 24th September from 6.45pm each evening. The work is part art object and part psychology experiment as Euan seeks to blur the lines between the performer and audience.  The Bystander Effect will test the individual’s sense of free will against a desire to fit in with those around them. Audience members are invited to join this crowd and may find themselves doing something they wouldn’t want to.

Previous winners of the award include Anna Henson, Greg Grant and Georgina Porteous.

Full information on the Arches Live 2011 programme will be available on the website and via our new Sept – Dec brochure soon. Arches Live returns from Tuesday 20th September – Saturday 1st October 2011.

ARCHES ANNOUNCE 2011 EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE SHOWS

Fri 10 Jun 2011

The Arches has announced that it will take two shows to the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.

The shows, May I have the Pleasure and The Pleasure of Being, are by the Arches’ Resident Artist Adrian Howells with May I Have the Pleasure…? a part of the Traverse Theatre’s festival offsite programme.

In May I Have The Pleasure…? (Traverse @ The Point Hotel from 17th-19th, 21st-24th, 27th -28th August with previews on 15th – 16th August), join Adrian at the last dance of yet another wedding disco in this new interactive performance, which uses humorous, poignant, autobiographical anecdote, original home movie footage and collective reminiscing to contemplate the irony of feeling isolated in the midst of a communal celebration of ‘coupledom’.

In The Pleasure of Being: Washing, Feeding, Holding (The Point Hotel on 19th and 21st – 28th August 2011) invites you to surrender to an intensely intimate, deeply sensorial and profoundly nurturing one-on-one experience as Adrian bathes your whole body (participants can choose to be either naked or wear their own bathing suit) in a luxurious bath consisting of bath milk, rose petals and essential oils before wrapping you in a large and comforting white fluffy bath towel. Adrian then cradles you in his arms, feeds you white Belgian chocolate and holds you for a prolonged period. The predominantly non verbal experience invites you to make a profound connection with both him and yourself and to enjoy a qualitative period of self investment away from the stresses of everyday life.
