When a major earthquake strikes, the Bay Area will face thousands of casualties, hundreds of thousands of displaced households, and losses in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Recovery will take years. In 2008, SPUR launched The Resilient City, a initiative to improve San Francisco's disaster planning policies. Our efforts are driven with a clear and transparent understanding of the particular hazards and risks faced by Bay Area communities—and by a growing sense of urgency as we brace ourselves for the Big One.
