CHF Awards 21 Research Grants for 2012 November 15, 2011

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is committing more than $1.5 million in 2012 on research grants to help dogs live longer, healthier lives. CHF approved 21 OAK grants to 14 research institutions and universities to conduct research covering canine health issues such as cataracts, carcinoma, dermatitis, epilepsy, liver disease, lymphoma, melanoma, and osteosarcoma.

Foundation Awards Scholarship to UPenn Vet Student October 19, 2011

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) has awarded the Robert L. Kelly Memorial Scholarship to Rebecca Csomos, Ph.D., who is originally from Toledo, Ohio. A student at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Csomos receives $2,500 for her veterinary studies and interest in canine heart diseases.

The Purebred Dog as an Ideal Cancer Research Model

In this edition of Genome Barks, Dr. Nick Duesbery, Co-Director of the Van Andel Research Institute’s Center for Comparative Biology and Genetics, discusses the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC), a national alliance of researchers with a common hope of improving the health and welfare of humans afflicted with rare tumors, and canines affected with the same respective cancer. Dr. Duesbery credits a CHF research grant for helping set the groundwork for what eventually grew into the CHCC. CHCC researchers are unraveling the genetic causes of several cancers, including but not limited to: hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma, melanoma, malignant histiocytic sarcoma, and lymphoma.
