Richard Alexander Caraballo began his minusbaby project in 1999

to explore the diversity of a lo-fi, compositional aesthetic and has

since progressed experimentally in its scope to include elements

guided by those roots and a sonic language representative of his

influences, namely: the art of bass and how it moves asses.

crashfaster

www.crashfaster.com/

Crashfaster is an electronic musician hailing from San Francisco,

California. His style skirts several genres including chiptune, electro,

dance and synth-pop. He combines the chipsets of a Gameboy,

NES and C64 with the analog beats of an 808/909 and a Vocoder

to craft his sound.

Burnkit2600

www.burnkit2600.com/

Burnkit2600 try to combine every new technical and cutting edge

method at their fingertips to create heavy, funky psychedelic grooves

with a live rock trio essence. The group does this with vintage

analog gear, old video game hardware, bass guitar, flute and

instruments of their own design.

No I/O this month but fear not, Cheese N Beer’s got you covered!

Cheese N Beer is proud to present the first installment of “CNB: Spectrum”, a new series of electronic music.

CNB: Spectrum signals an expansion: the extension of space and sound for both established and emerging artists. Spectrum aims to celebrate chip music’s accomplishments by deliberately stretching its boundaries. These concerts pay homage to our community by challenging the very limits of chip music we’ve established. We’re excited to do so by actively welcoming diverse styles, platforms, and media to this series of shows: you will never fully know what to expect.

We hope you’ll join us for our debut at Brooklyn Fireproof East!

VISUALS:

NO CARRIER (Brooklyn, NY) [no-carrier.com/]

Don Miller is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. He performs live visuals in real time under the alias NO CARRIER. Miller works with nearly obsolete repurposed electronics to create high energy low resolution abstract video art. Part of the 8bitpeoples artist collective, he performs, exhibits, and lectures worldwide. In his hometown of Philadelphia Miller organizes and curates 8static, a monthly showcase of low-bit music and video. He also serves as a Director of Playpower, a non-profit organization that works to bring low-cost educational games to developing countries.

MUSIC:

Chipocrite (Philadelphia, PA) [chipocrite.com/]

Chipocrite aka Paul Weinstein (former bassist of MJ Project, Philadelphia’s favorite jamtronfusion monstergroup) started making music with Game Boys in early 2009. It was the sound he felt he was destined to create, a mix of old and new, a way to bridge the comforting video game tones he grew up with and the complex but catchy songs he was hearing in his head all those years later. He’s constantly adding new songs to his repertoire, which has been described as “upbeat and danceable.” It’s exciting, it’s neato, and, above all, it’s some of the most fun he’s ever had making music.

Zen Albatross (Brooklyn, NY) [zenalbatross.net/]

By day, Brooklyn journalist Zen Albatross worriedly studies the rapidly decaying culture of information politics, technology and creative freedom. He processes these anxieties into cathartic expressions of audible violence, crafting colossal obelisks of hip-shaking sound using the antiquated circuitry of a Nintendo Game Boy. His fascination with chip music, its history and associated disciplines has led him to speak and perform in cities across the US, as well as publish articles on the subject for various outlets including VICE Magazine’s Motherboard.tv, Racketboy and Original Sound Version.

DaPantz (Bronx/Brooklyn, NY) [dapantz.com/]

Uptown New York’s sarcastically named DaPantz is an electronic musician based in the Bronx. Exploring large-scale issues through low-grade gear, he creates an array of heavy beats and industrial melodies rooted in distortion, design, and discourse. Adopting a critical view of disorder, DaPantz creates challenging, but ultimately thrilling pieces of autobiography that push outdated hardware to its contemporary limit.

I/O Chip Music

I/O is a monthly show in New York City that showcases the talents of musicians and artists who use computer chips in vintage computers and game consoles to create new compositions and visual art. I/O is free to play and low cost to attend, with the aim of providing exposure and new audiences for chip musicians and visualists.

Returning to Brooklyn’s best new independent art space Vaudeville Park on Saturday, July 2nd, I/O starts your holiday weekend up right with an all-star lineup and all ages show! This will be the last I/O of the summer and we’re going out like a fireworks display so don’t miss it!

MUSIC

gwEm and A-Me (UK)

Veteran chiptuner gwEm has had a distinguished body of releases from micromusic.net, 8bitpeoples, and the seminal 8bit Operator release on Astralwerks. A-Me is the side project of British folk musician Amy Sayer, who had successful releases with the Sulusse label “Zonoff”, among others. After a series of collaborations in London, the two present a unique show using meandering vocal lines and sentimental 8bit with the occasional high octane kick.

L-tron (Brooklyn NY)

L-tron is a intergalactic robot sent from the future to blast your mind full of pure, concentrated laser. Equipped only with a Game Boy and lunch box, this is one cybernetic maniac you don’t want to miss…

Balún
www.balunonline.com/

Brought together by their love of simple melodies, 16mm films, cartoon doodles, classical and folk instruments, and experimental pop music, Balún was formed in San Juan, Puerto Rico by José Olivares and Angélica Negrón, and now includes Andrés Fontanez, Noraliz Ruíz, Leonardo Velázquez and Justin Wolf.

The band has performed at Decibel Fest, Pop Montreal, Nacotheque and Pulsewave with artists like Vampire Weekend, Headlights, Tujiko Noriko, minusbaby, and Barbara Morgenstern. They have also collaborated with illustrator Tatiana Arocha on a short film for the DVD series PSST! and with Puerto Rican experimental theater company Y No Había Luz.

Mark DeNardo
www.markdenardo.com/

Is anti-chip-punk-folk a genre? Perhaps not, but Mark DeNardo is the first name that comes to my mind. Classifying his music output as chip or punk or folk would do a disservice to all parties. The Graffiti Monsters front man, Fables folk shredder, and solo chip songster demonstrates well what happens when one “writes chip music for ten years” : twice the pride, double the achievement.

HeavyW8bit ChampionChip
www.heavyw8bit.com/

An 8-bit maniac and developer of the NSK-1 synthesizer for the Nintendo NES, this retired wrestler turned chip musician clotheslines his way to New York City for his Chinatown circuit debut.

Goferboy
www.8bitcollective.com/members/goferboy/

Many times a boy has taken to a stage, and many times a boy has danced. But only once has a boy deliver the furry and explosiveness to a stage that goferboy has. Also known as Henry Andrew Baum, goferboy began his existence as a twinkle in his father’s eye that turned into a flame that could be extinguished. His sound, using gameboys as his weapons, vary from melodic frolics, to gloomy bass, and disco pulsations. The results impregnates the audiences ears, as his provocative, neon hip fluxuations, fertilizes their hearts.

About the release:

On April 4th, 2009, I wrote the first song on this record; a post-it note featuring a crudely drawn arpeggiator became “Here Come the Pretzels!”, a reference to watching The Simpsons with my family that inspired me to explore the autobiographical nature of home.

A tribute to project housing and salsa music became “Elevators”. I synthesized the increasing acceleration of my cousin’s Chevy Tahoe into the EP’s title track. Most telling, however, is the album’s central effort, a celebration of friendship named after one of many physical connections to my peers throughout Brooklyn: “Triborough Bridge”. Indeed, while at first glance this seems to be yet another salute to the Bronx, a closer look reveals what’s really being said underneath the raucous shouts of “BX ALL DAY”: that it’s time to fucking party with my friends. Let’s GO!
