Update on New Database

spacer The long lonely offseason begins, and for ballplayers like Napoleon Lajoie, there's nothing to do but wait until spring. For stats junkies, the end of the season means the imminent arrival of a new version of the Lahman Baseball Database.

Although the regular season has ended, we are still waiting for the conclusion of the World Series and the announcement of the annual award winners (MVP, Cy Young, etc.), which are included in the database. Once we have all of that information in hand, we'll be ready to announce a release date for the new version of the database. Older versions remain available for download, and we will accept pre-orders for the CD-ROM version as of October 20th.

Notes From the Shadows of Cooperstown

spacer Poet. Playwright. Pirates fan. Two Finger Carney is all of those things, and more. In the latest edition of Notes from the Shadows of Cooperstown, he offers his own unique thoughts on the game and his observations from outside the lines.

Carney’s newest book, Burying the Black Sox: How Baseball's Cover-up of the 1919 World Series Fix Almost Succeeded, is shipping now.

spacer Reversing the (Other) Curse

Sure the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years, but they also reversed the Curse of Gary Carter.  When the Mets beat the Sox in the 1986 Series, Carter was the league's highest paid player.  In the 17 years that followed, the highest paid player watched the playoffs from home every fall.  Sean Lahman looks at this trend, and why it may be changing for good.

spacer Rose's Admission

Pete Rose has publicly admitted to what we all knew; that he bet on baseball while serving as manager of the Reds.  So what's next?  Sean Lahman, who has frequently written on the case, checked in with his thoughts on the day Rose confessed and what it means both for him and for baseball.
