I once I said that if I wrote a book specifically for the residential design/build business, Distinctive Landscaping Journal was right on target for what I’d put in there. Many of the things I constantly hear these contractors asking for are answered in DLJ. And the answers come from the stories told by real life contractors running their own businesses. There’s no better way to bring these concepts home more forcefully than to have your peers tell you things they’ve done that have worked.
I am not talking about a single feature article. Every article in every issue tells the story – and visually illustrates the story – of a real project. These stories tell how the customer selected their contractor/designer, and how the contractor/designer interacted with the customer to land a job to understand the customer’s needs and to manage the job to the customer’s satisfaction. Articles tell how the designer came up with the ideas that won the customer over, and how the construction manager dealt with changes and installation challenges.
The Vander Kooi team put together the concept for these stories based on what we hear on our consulting visits helping contractors manage their businesses. No one can tell these stories better from the contractor’s point of view than our editor Tom Hatlen, the long-time editor of Pro Magazine and now a member of the Vander Kooi team. Under his direction nothing is included unless it meets our team’s standards for on-target information contractors and designers can use.
Well, today, DLJ is no longer in publication as a magazine. So, true to my word, I’ve had Distinctive Landscaping Journal turned into a book.We combined the complete volume of DLJ magazine issues into a 224-page, full-color idea book you will want to use as a reference over and over again.
