Classification Directions: To do this activity, please download the appropriate activity sheet from the list below. Each activity sheet lists the nouns from each puzzle and four headings (animal, person, place and thing). Readers are instructed to look carefully at the puzzle, then write each short vowel noun under the correct category. Short A, Classification

Label the Puzzle Directions: To do this activity, please download the appropriate activity sheet from the list below. Children will write the correct word in each available label in these black and white line version of each puzzle, then color the picture. Labels are larger and fewer than those on the actual puzzles. Short A, Labeling

  Sent Away:
Small or large group activity.
  1. On the left side of a board, write 5 words from a short vowel puzzle in a column.
  2. On the right hand side of the board write the heading "Sent Away."
  3. Ask the group to repeat the words after you, using their eyes to "take pictures" of the words.
  4. Ask the group to close their eyes
  5. While the group has their eyes closed erase one of the words from the list saying, "I’m going to 'Send Away' one of these words."
  6. After the word is erased, tell the class to open their eyes, then ask, "Which word did I send away?"
  7. Ask the child who correctly guessed the word to write it under the heading "Sent Away."
  8. With 4 words left, the CHILD from step 7 repeats steps 4 through 6 with the group.
  9. Repeat until the list contains only 1 word, you may decide to add more words to the list or continue to step 10.
  10. At the conclusion of the game, repeat the entire list of short-vowel words as a group, or with volunteers.
Listen, and Don't Repeat!
Small group activity. After the Puzzle has been completed, each child names one or two of the short vowel words on the puzzle. The “tricky” part of this is that they have to Listen Carefully to each other and not repeat the words already said!

Write a Story
Individual Activity. After you have put the puzzle together, write a short story about what is happening in the picture. Use the words on the puzzle to help you write your story.
