For Those of You That Celebrate It…and Even Those That Don’t!

November 23rd, 2006 by Judie
spacer

I want to take this opportunity to tell you all what I am thankful for this year…

1. I am thankful for my family and close friends, that they put up with my odd hours and compulsive computering without too many complaints. spacer  I am thankful that they are all generally very understanding and forgiving of the fact that I spend nearly every waking moment doing something gadget related - even when I am sick or supposedly on vacation. I am thankful that they usually understand that the only way for me to relax is if I am in front of a screen - whether it be PDA or computer. Yep, I am a geek. spacer

2. I am thankful for the contributors to this site, the ones who have written articles, commentaries and reviews. You all make it possible to keep Gear Diary well rounded - and not just from the viewpoint of one person. Thanks to you all, I can take a breather every now and then. I truly appreciate you!

3. I am thankful for the people that email or comment telling me that they appreciate this site and the work that we are doing. Your support means more to me than you will ever know.

4. I am thankful for the people that come to this site but that never email or comment; those that enjoy our posts and come back again and again looking for “new stuff”. We’ll do our best to keep you entertained, informed, and coming back for more!

5. I am thankful for the friends I have, those I’ve met in person and those I’ve met only through email, that encouraged me with emotional and technical support when I decided to start my own site. Each one of you is awesome…and you know who you are!! spacer

6. I am thankful for the vendors and companies that have shown support for this site, either by sponsoring it directly or by providing contest give-aways. I would like to take a moment to recognize Michael from RoadWired, Federico from Vaja, Johan from Neuros Audio and Mike from Ultimate Ears. I would also like to thank David from Netline (which manages our Free Trade Publications section) and Steve from Mobihand (which manages our software and accessory store). You guys are wonderful, and I appreciate you!

7. I am thankful for the other mobility site owners and writers that send me links when they have posted something they want to share with Gear Diary readers. It is not always possible for me to comb each and every site everyday for the latest news - even those on my favorite’s list! I appreciate that you all email me to share your breaking stories. spacer

8. I am thankful for the other mobility site owners and writers that post links back to reviews and blurbs that we have posted here. Nothing makes us more proud than to see one of our posts mentioned on another site. We appreciate the link love, and hope to return the favor when we can.

2006 has brought me much to be thankful for. Thank you for sharing it with me, and thank you for your continued support.

I hope your Thanksgiving Day is wonderful and you get to spend it with the people you love! spacer

Weigh In On Retrevo

November 22nd, 2006 by Judie

I recently received this email for a new service called Retrevo…

spacer

Given your interest in gadgets and gadget news, I wanted to tell you about the Google for gadgets, retrevo.com. Retrevo is a dedicated search engine for all types of gadget info - product reviews, forum buzz, troubleshooting & tech support documentation. Retrevo will be announcing a new “Daily Deals” service that provides a one-stop, meta-search for finding the best web-only deals on consumer electronics products/gadgets. The Daily Deals portion of the site hasn’t launched yet, however, you can preview it at alpha.retrevo.com.  Just plug in your favorite gadget in the search bar and click on “daily deals” on the left hand side. I invite you to check it out and let us know what you think. Thanks!

Okay, I tried it out and I think it looks pretty slick. Not only does it pull up the top results for purchasing the item as well as any daily deals, it also has tabs for manufacturer information, reviews & articles, and forums & blog postings.

Gift Suggestion #2: For the Person Who Has Everything

November 22nd, 2006 by Judie

There is no doubt that many of us who love gadgets are very hard to shop for. We don’t always think to tell our loved ones what accessory we want next; we’ll generally buy it and then hear from our spouses and close friends that they would have got the item for us “if they had only known.”

This can create a dilemma around birthdays and other traditional gift-giving times.

spacer

So what do you buy the person that has everything? What do you buy someone with needs so specific that it’s almost a given that whatever you get might be “wrong” because they either already have it, or they won’t use it?

Zune + Vista = YES

November 22nd, 2006 by Judie

Paul from MoDaCo has created a wonderful little patch that will enable you to use your Zune with Windows Vista.

Obviously he should not have had to make the patch in the first place - these two brand new Microsoft products should have worked perfectly together from the get-go, but it is great that he was able to quickly create this fix.

spacer

So!

If you have a Zune and you are running Vista, get on over and grab Paul’s Patch! spacer

The Case Logic 6 Capacity USB Drive Shuttle Review

November 22nd, 2006 by Allen Hong

While I was at CompUSA one day… I came across the USB flash drive case made by Case Logic (model JDC6). Case Logic calls it the “6 Capacity USB Drive Shuttle“. I thought what a neat idea. My USB flash drive collection is growing and carrying more than one is proving to be some what of a problem, so I bought the case.

The Vaja I-volution For Palm Treo 700 Series Case Review

November 21st, 2006 by Judie

It wasn’t long after I received a Palm 700p review unit that I knew I would be buying either the Palm OS version or the WM5 version of the Treo to use as my mobile phone. Other than which OS to go with, my next decision was what case. I’ll admit it, I went right to the Vaja site, and I literally swooned when I saw the T7 Silver.

However, reality eventually set in once I saw the price for that intricate piece of sterling silver accented leather-art. Luckily, there was a very similar case available with a more wallet-friendly price - the i-volution for Palm Treo 700 Series.

As with all Vaja cases, the first thing that greets the owner upon opening the box is the yummy smell of perfectly tanned Argentinean leather. The second thing that the owner will notice is the case’s complete attention to detail. Everything is laid out perfectly, and all has been created with a good experience in mind for the owner.

Thinking About a BlackBerry Pearl?

November 21st, 2006 by Judie

Well, then after you have read the latest reviews on it - including Ed’s, Eric’s, and Tong’s - you’ll need to think about some accessories. spacer

Kat from Proporta just sent me an email featuring a few cases that might interest owners of this newest and slickest BlackBerry device. The first is the Alu-Leather Book, and the second is the Alu-Leather Flip.

spacer

Both cases use Proporta’s trademark “Screen Saver System” which “uses a sheet of rigid, lightweight aircraft grade aluminium to line the case, protecting your delicate device screen from crushing and impact shocks.”

The Phantom EFX Reel Deal Casino High Roller Review

November 21st, 2006 by Debra

Reel Deal is a casino PC game.  Specs include Windows 2000 or later, CD-Rom, 1.5 GB hard drive, DirectX 9.0b or later, DirectX compatible video card.  Money and VIP comp points are earned as you play slot machines, table games and enter tournaments.  The casino is easy to navigate and there is a menu board for the many games.

spacer

I had to read the directions to get the game loaded and reinstall the second CD, but once it installed, it worked like a dream.  The graphics are good, animation flows well and it is a very enjoyable casino experience.  I felt that all I needed while playing the slots was a cocktail waitress.

Goin’ to Kansas City…Kansas City Here [We] Come

November 19th, 2006 by Judie

We just arrived in Kansas City, and are looking forward to spending the Thanksgiving Holiday week with Steve’s sister and her family. I am really looking forward to all of the time together; the last time we saw our neices was in March, and our little nephew was just a baby-slug. Now he is all bright-eyed and has such a personality! spacer

But before I say any more about family…I have to show you something I saw at the Houston Airport, that I can honestly say that I never thought I would see; it was kinda cool, actually…

There was a guy traveling with one of those Dell “Media Mogul” laptops, the M2010. spacer

The Datexx SuperBattery Rechargeable USB Power Bank Review

November 17th, 2006 by Judie

Datexx seems to have a power generator for just about every situation in which a user might find his or herself. Today I am going to take a look at their SuperBattery, which is billed as a rechargeable USB power bank that can be used to extend a device’s battery power or give a one-hour fast charge when a device’s battery gets low. It also includes a built-in LED flashlight, and it can be powered either by connecting to a wall charger or by using the built-in hand crank.
