'Saved' may have saved actor's career Luaine Lee, McClatchy-Tribune News Services PASADENA, CALIF. - He's great at making tie-dye T-shirts and handy at Spackling holes in the wall, but Tom Everett Scott isn't good at anything else -- except for acting, that is. The man whom Tom Hanks chose to play the lead in the film "That Thing You Do" is proving his mettle as star of "Saved," an absorbing new TNT series. Scott plays a paramedic on the firing line of casualties and crises. Scott, 35, majored in communication at Syracuse University. After he graduated, he moved to New York. There, he had what he calls "a real moment of clarity of getting it together. ... I was waiting tables, but just partying. Not making a full-on push. I knew: you're going to have to die trying. I'm willing to die trying. So I made this big decision to full-out go for it and work hard at it." He found an agent in the first few months with a minor breakthrough when he landed a spot in a McDonald's commercial. He played a young white-collar worker who prepares to ask his boss for a raise. "I thought I was set, was going to make $50,000. But I made $5,000, paid off my debts and went further into debt -- and waited for the next commercial. I lived by the mailbox for a while," he said. For three years, he bunked with two other guys in a cramped New York apartment and earned a small role on "Law & Order." The real turning point came with "That Thing You Do," a film about a struggling pop-rock group in the early '60s. Scott hightailed it to Los Angeles when he won the second lead in Steven Bochco's drama, "Philly," with Kim Delaney. But the show wasn't renewed after 22 episodes. That was four years ago. In "Saved," Scott's character is unsure of the path he has taken and nurses a gambling habit. Scott couldn't be more different. When he was in the fifth grade he watched his older sister recite one line in "South Pacific." "I sat in the audience and didn't have any idea what doing a play was about," he says, "but when she said her one line, I thought, 'She blew it. I could've done it better.' And I think that's where it all started, wanting to go up there and do it myself." Saved Picked Up As a Full Series! | Posted By: Skyler on 14 Aug 2006 |
"TNT has picked up drama pilot 'Saved' to series, ordering a full season of the Fox 21/Imagine Television show. 'Saved,' a chronicle of a troubled paramedic working in Portland, Ore., will shoot 12 more episodes in the spring in anticipation of joining TNT`s schedule in the summer. It is the third original drama the cable network has committed to, the first since unveiling 'The Closer' and 'Wanted' last summer. David Manson (FX`s 'Thief') and David Nevins are executive producers of 'Saved,' which stars Tom Everett Scott and Elizabeth Reaser. "Like TNT`s hit series `The Closer,` `Saved` is a character-driven procedural drama featuring a tough, somewhat flawed, three-dimensional central character trying to make it in an ever-complicated world," said Michael Wright, senior vice president original programming at TNT and TBS. 'Saved' was one of three drama pilots TNT was considering for the summer slot, in addition to 'Talk to Me,' from Dean Devlin and Lionsgate, and 'Grace,' from Spelling TV. No decision has been made as to whether TNT will make an additional order." Source: Monstersandcritics.com |
