A Walk through Shocco

Just a few minutes from Talladega, Alabama, lies 783 acres of land. It is a place of refuge from today’s society; a quiet, peaceful place for learning more about God and training to serve Him, while surrounded by His creation.

Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center has been a gathering place for Christians from around the world for more than 60 years. Walking through the campus, guests are captivated by the wonder of nature at Shocco Springs. “This is such an awesome retreat. I felt so close to the Lord surrounded by His creation,” commented Joyce Higuchi, a guest from Wailuku, Hawaii, about her visit at Shocco. “This is just a small taste of what it will be like in our Heavenly home with Him,” said Lahoma Stumbaugh, a guest from Prattville, Alabama. Hoyt Wilson from Birmingham, Alabama, was impressed by the clean-kept grounds and facilities and commented, “The grounds were so clean and beautiful. They said, ‘Welcome…God’s spirit lives here.’”

Groups choose Shocco as their meeting place for leadership training, spiritual growth, evangelism and fellowship. When not attending conferences or worship services, guests enjoy a variety of activities. The lake provides not only beautiful scenery, but opportunities for paddle boating and fishing. Swimming in the pool and splashing in Shocco’s aqua park are popular options in the summer. The recreation area surrounding the lake includes miniature golf, horseshoes, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, playing fields, paintball, bazooka ball and pedal cars. The Ricker Activities Center provides an indoor climbing wall and a versatile gymnasium/meeting area. Other recreational opportunities include leisurely walks around campus and hiking along two walking trails.

The Adventure Recreation program is a popular feature available year round. It includes high ropes and low ropes courses, as well as a paintball course. This powerful ministry tool uses elements of controlled risk, recreation and education in a unique setting. The program builds unity within a group and promotes self-esteem. Through trust-building experiences, initiative games and climbing on the ropes course, spiritual truths are discovered and applied. Groups ranging from sixth graders to adults enjoy the challenges of Adventure Recreation.

After a long day of conferences, guests find comfort and relaxation in Shocco’s accommodations. Three guest hotels have modern rooms and many conveniences. Five of the eight lodges have conference rooms in the buildings. Adventure Camp facilities offer a rustic retreat setting. Located in a more secluded area, Adventure Camp is home to Robert Weaver Chapel, a dining room and five housing buildings.

The George Bagley Conference Center houses twelve meeting rooms, a Christian bookstore and gift shop, a snack shop and a 500-capacity dining room. Bagley Center also offers complimentary computers for guest use. Wireless Internet is available in the majority of buildings on campus. The hospitality desk on the main floor is staffed with employees who are committed to customer service.
