Three Fiji Mermaids for a group show called Creatures From the Deep at 225 Forest in Laguna Beach on May 3rd.

These guys were really fun! A little more work on them(they’re getting brass nameplates), and I’ll take better pictures then.

in progress!

I forgot to take a picture of this guy before I sold him at Wondercon, so this picture will have to do.

I also sketched this for future sculpting. I’ve been sketching a lot lately, but I’m clearing off a nice big chunk of time in my life to get my hands filthy and clayed up again…so, more updates soon!

Wondercon report with Margaret Sockpuppet

March 19th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Thank you to everyone who came out to visit Sawdust Bear/Press at Wondercon!

I’d type up a con report, but really – pictures of Margaret, the orange sock puppet, are probably much more amusing anyway.

Also, I didn’t get a picture with/of Greg Means of Tugboat Press, but the Papercutter comics anthology was my favourite Wondercon find, and I feel silly for not knowing it about it sooner. The most recent one, especially – which is seven stories written by Jason Martin, and illustrated by seven equally incredible cartoonists, is like getting punched in the gut(in a good way. it just resonated a lot with me). Visit their website here!

I ALSO did not get a picture of Drew Rausch, which is a shame, because he had fantastic hair, but you should check out his comic Eldritch(written by Aaron Alexovich, who is also awesome and I also met!). And his OTHER comic, Sullengrye, who is written by the excellent Jocelyn. I can wholeheartedly recommend it because if you follow me, you are probably at least slightly partial to tentacles and odd things.

Anyway, onward to pictures, all filtered through the lens of Instagram faux nostalgia!

First, I made Margaret booth babe for me, but she wasn’t very happy about that.

spacer

She was a bit happier hanging out with my neighbour, Gabe Swarr, who does the nostalgia bomb comic Life in the Analog Age(it’s really, really good). Margaret also matched his booth perfectly.

spacer

I agreed to take Margaret on a walk, after she started getting grumpy. She doesn’t really appreciate “What’s wrong wih you? Got a hand up your ass?” jokes, apparently.

the secret life of hiveblobs.

March 13th, 2012 § 1 comment § permalink

Hiveblobs are amphibious critters that dwell near saltwater ponds. They are notable for the webbed sacs attached to their bodies, which are used for carrying and transporting food, homebuilding materials, and children. Hiveblobs are notable for their strong family structure. At adulthood, hiveblobs are drawn to a family group, after which they will communally raise young hiveblobs.

Female hiveblobs carry their webbed sacs in the front of their body. They generally only have one or two large sacs, although some variations exist. When fertile, female hiveblobs lay their eggs in a shared pool, which is then fertilized by the males in the family group. Thus, the parentage of any given hiveblob is unknown.

spacer

The male hiveblob also has webbed sacs, although they are primarily located on his back. The male’s webbed sacs are smaller, but he usually has 4-5 of them. He is primarily responsible for carrying eggs through gestation, although many remain active and involved in raising healthy, active baby hiveblobs.
spacer

A hiveblob’s webbed sac is very comfortable. Often, children hiveblobs have to be forcibly evicted as they grow up. Adolescent hiveblobs still dwelling in their parent webbed sacs are not held in high regard.

weekend review

March 5th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

You might have noticed that I didn’t really stick to my “finish one sculpture” a week resolution. Expectedly, my new year’s resolutions aren’t going great. I’m still not working out more either, although I’m eating a lot less meat, which was a lot easier than I had anticipated.

This weekend, I cuddled with my cat a lot. He is an expert cuddler. Actually, based on my exhaustive review of cat cuddling, I would rank Gus in the top 5% of cat cuddlers.

Here’s a picture of our cuddling.
spacer

After cuddling, I worked on a project that I’ve been talking about since grad school. In the shop, we had a tiny little flux core welder that we called the “Barbie Dream Welder.” and I swore that one day I’d paint it pink. I didn’t, but now that I’m older and have one of my very own(although it’s a wee bit larger than the original tiny welder), I decided to turn it into the Barbie Dream Welder I always dreamed of as a little girl.

spacer

The Barbie Dream Welder is brought to you by Rustoleum’s gloss spray paint in Berry Pink.

spacer

I also worked on some more stuff for Wondercon which is barreling down on me like a very large barrel. Here’s a stack of suckerfeets.

spacer

..aaaand here’s a pile of monster paintings on woodblocks.
spacer

I think I’ll have the woodblock paintings at cons only…they’ll replace my $20 sculpey monsters and be easier for me to transport! Speaking of cons, the ones I’m doing this year are…Wondercon, Stumptown Comics, SDCC, and DesignerCon. I’ll probably go to GeekGirlCon too, but I may not be a vendor there.

That’s all for today, folks! Follow me on Tumblr if you want less structured updates about my life, art, and you know, all my feelings about everything ever.

i love instagram.

I love my iPhone, and I love Instagram. I’m sure there’s a lot that can be said about picture quality, or silly twee filters, but the simple fact is that I document my work twice as often now and that is a good thing.

seacucumbers and other fatties

February 28th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

I am so terribly uninteresting.

But I’ve been making things! Hopefully I might even have made enough things to go to Wondercon and not be embarrassed by my barren table!

Here is Mr. C. Cucumber Davis, who is a sea cucumber. He’s got one coat of paint on, and several more to go.
spacer

And here’s a little fatty, who unfortunately, will be quite dissected.
spacer

And here’s a general look at some of the other things that will be coming to Wondercon with me(in various stages of completion! The bottle of whiskey in the corner is staying home.

The Margaret Show

February 20th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Today was an unexpected day off, so I made a puppet.

I’ve always liked the concept of video blogging, but I dislike being in front of a camera. Margaret is an orange puppet that likes tomatoes, and she does not mind being in front of a camera.

Here’s me and Margaret again.

I still have a couple of rockbeasts in my store – it turns out everyone was going for the same two pieces. spacer
