Recent actions

  • On February 7 the Greens/EFA Co-Presidents Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Rebecca Harms alert the President of the European Parliament of complaints to the Ombudsman regarding access to ACTA-related documents.
  • On November 8 Open Workshop on ACTA with Joe McNamee and Marie Humeau from EDRi in room A3E3 08h30-10h00. All welcome. See video recording online.
  • On October 11 the studies ACTA and Access to Medicines and Opinion on the compatibility of ACTA with the ECHR and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights commissioned by the Greens/EFA were published.
  • On October 4 Press Conference 13:00-13:30 "Does ACTA violate fundamental rights?" in European Parliament press room, PHS 0A50, with MEP Jan Albrecht and Prof. Dr. Douwe Korff.
  • On September 25 the one month period for public comment on ACTA AND ACCESS TO MEDICINES and Opinion on the compatibility of ACTA with the ECHR and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights closed.

Previous actions

  • On 31 may Greens/EFA Group decides to support EDRi's request "that all relevant documents (drafts distributed by the European Commission and associated briefing notes from the Commission) received by the Parliament be published and/or communicated directly to us as soon as possible."
  • On 31 may Greens/EFA Group writes a letter to President of the European Parliament regarding when the Parliament can ask the Court for an opinion
  • On 19 April Greens/EFA Group writes a letter to President of the European Parliament for an opinion of the ECJ on ACTA.
  • On 22 March Greens/EFA MEPs to debate Legal Affairs Committee coordinators agenda item on ACTA.
  • On 8 March MEP Jan Albrecht formally requests, in the name of the Greens/EFA, the Legal Affairs Committee coordinators to put a decision to obtain the opinion of the ECJ on ACTA on the agenda of the next Committee meeting 21st March.
  • On 3 December Greens/EFA MEPs asked the Committee on Legal Affairs to take a formal decision to ask the legal service of the Parliament if ACTA is compatible with the Treaties of the European Union.
  • On 24 November Greens/EFA resolution on ACTA - "Preparing for the Consent Procedure" was rejected in Plenary.
  • On 16 November the Greens/EFA adopted the resolution ACTA - preparing for the Consent Procedure for the November II Plenary session in Strasbourg.
  • On 9 November the Greens/EFA ACTA WG put online a draft for a resolution on ACTA for the November II Plenary session, in cooperation with MEPs from other political groups, for the purpose of asking the public and experts for comments. The online consultation closed for comments on 15 November.

  • On 11 October Greens/EFA MEP Carl Schlyter asked the Article 29 Working Party for a detailed assessment of ACTA.
  • On 7 October Greens/EFA participated in a debriefing on the latest round of ACTA negotiations.
  • On 4 October in response to the joint statement by ACTA parties, MEP Ska Keller tabled a question to the Commission and a priority question to the Council.
  • On 2 October MEPs received a Joint Statement from all negociating parties from John Clancy, EU Commission Trade Spokesperson
  • On 27 September MEPs received an answer to written question E-4292/10
  • On 23 September Mr. Yoshihiro Takeda of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs answers MEP Ska Keller that The Government of Japan regrets it cannot arrange a meeting during the week of September 27.
  • On 22 September MEP Ska Keller wrote on behalf of the Greens/EFA Bureau to Mr. Yoshihiro Takeda of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and asked for a public meeting to be arranged for the the week of September 27.
  • On 14 September a Greens/EFA Resolution on ACTA for the September II Plenary was drafted. However, the Conference of Presidents decided not to have a resolution.
  • On 8 September Greens/EFA MEPs participated in the Plenary debate following the Commission statement - Ongoing negotiations on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

  • On July 7 Greens/EFA adopted an urgent appeal for transparency in the negotiations on ACTA.
  • On June 28 Greens/EFA participated in a Geneva Workshop organised by KEI and IQsensato.
  • On June 23 eleven (11) Greens/EFA ACTA WG MEPs signed the Washington Communique
  • On June 3 more questions were asked focussing on whether ACTA is undermining access to medicines and constrain future policy options.
  • On May 31 MEP Ska Keller asked a priority question to the Commission about provisions in ACTA "that clearly breach commitments under the Doha Declaration".
  • On May 26 seven Greens/EFA MEPs wrote a follow up letter to WTO president Pascal Lamy asking for comments on the "potential implications of new global norms that may emerge from ACTA", whether "ACTA parties approached, consulted or shared further information about the negotiations with the WTO" and "To what extent would a decision in the dispute supersede ACTA provisions that exceed those in the TRIPS Agreement or the GATT or conflict with the decision?"
  • On May 6 WIPO Director General Francis Gurry answered the Greens/EFA MEPs letter saying: "Based on its long experience in international norm-setting relating to IP, WIPO is committed to ensuring inclusive, transparent processes."
  • On May 5 the EP approved with overwhelming majority a Resolution on the EU-Canada Summit which says ACTA should be opened up to public scrutiny and conducted "under the auspices of an international organisation, the most suitable being WIPO".
  • On May 4 WTO president Pascal Lamy answered the Greens/EFA MEPs letter saying WTO Members could request the WTO secretariat to answer the questions in the letter.
  • On May 4 the Greens/EFA organised a workshop on ACTA and the public interest where India made its first public statement on ACTA. The broadcast had about 890 live viewers.
  • On April 21 Greens/EFA MEPs Jan Albrecht and Christian Engström said in a press release they expect to continue to "receive all relevant ACTA negotiation documents" from the Commission..
  • On April 20 Daniel Cohn-Bendit asked Barroso in a Plenary debate to publish all ACTA texts.
  • On April 15 seven Greens/EFA MEPs asks WIPO and WTO about transparency, enforcement and norm-setting in relation to ACTA and asks for impact assessments of such aspects. They also "request clarification regarding the relationship between ACTA Institution and WIPO in scenarios where the ACTA Secretariat operates under the WTO, the WIPO, or as an independent body."
  • On March 10 the EP adopted a Resolution on the transparency and state of play of the ACTA negotiations
