Proposals for strategic clinical networks

The NHS Future Forum recommended a review of the role of clinical networks in the new NHS commissioning system. The Clinical Transitions Director for the NHS Medical Directorate, Dr Kathy McLean is leading work to develop proposals for the development of Strategic Clinical Networks. Dr McLean’s team has engaged a large number of NHS staff, network members and stakeholders in the design of these proposals. Dr McLean held a webinar in February, setting out the latest thinking on Strategic Clinical Networks.

The team has incorporated comments and feedback from the webinar into its proposals. Further information on the next stage of the project will be posted on the NHS Commissioning Board Authority website in due course.

Effective pathways for long term conditions

For those with long term conditions it is important to ensure that we not only add years to life, but add life to those years. Looking across the specialties NHS Improvement works with we have identified four key areas across the pathway where patients and carers want improvements:

- Stabilising the condition
- Supporting patients to live their lives
- Timely intervention
- Providing choice and support towards the end of life

Seven Day Services

spacer NHS Improvement has been working with clinical teams across health and social care to find examples of equality of treatment and outcome regardless of the day of the week.

Our case study pages demonstrate where extended working days or weeks have been successfully implemented to ensure that patients are able to readily access both acute, elective and reablement services across primary and secondary care.
