spacer  ACC's NCDR and STS Launch New Registry to Track TVT Procedures (posted: 12/01/11)
The NCDR has launched a new registry in collaboration with The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. The STS/ACC TVT RegistryTM is the first national program to evaluate safety and efficacy of a transcatheter valve aortic replacement (TAVR) option for patients who are otherwise considered to be non-operable for conventional valve replacement surgery.

“The TVT Registry will provide an ideal mechanism for monitoring the use of transcatheter valve therapy,” said ACC President David R. Holmes, Jr., MD, FACC. “The Registry can provide relatively rapid feedback to individual sites and help identify trends in its usage. The Registry will also provide a rich source of data for long-term research. The ACC is pleased that through the work of the NCDR, we have been able to partner with STS in the development of this new tool and play a role in the thoughtful introduction of this therapy in the United States.”

ACC, STS Developing New Registry to Track TAVR Procedures

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced approval of the Edwards Lifesciences SAPIEN Transcatheter Heart Valve. This is one of several devices in development for use in the emerging field of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

In their announcement, the FDA noted that Edwards Lifescience will continue to evaluate the outcomes of the SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve through a national Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) Registry that will track patient safety and real world outcomes related to emerging TAVR procedures.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) have been working with the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the development of this new registry, called the TVT RegistryTM, which is scheduled to launch in late 2011. The registry will be the first national program to evaluate safety and efficacy of a TAVR option for patients who are otherwise considered to be high-risk or non-operable for conventional valve replacement surgery.

spacer  NCDR® Research Shows Majority of US PCIs Are Appropriate, But Room for Improvement Exists (posted: 07/06/11)
A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association titled “Appropriateness of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention,” shows that although the majority of patients are appropriately selected for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, there are opportunities for improvement, especially in the non-emergency setting.

Using data from the CathPCI Registry®, researchers examined records from U.S. hospitals captured between July 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010. Each PCI procedure was classified as “appropriate”, “uncertain”, or “inappropriate”, according to published Appropriate Use Criteria for Coronary Revascularization. Findings showed that a vast majority of PCIs performed in acute settings (98.6%) were classified as appropriate. For non-acute indications, however, 11.6% were classified as inappropriate, with substantial variation noted across hospitals.

spacer  Newly Published NCDR Research: Use of Emergency Medical Service Transport Among STEMI Patients (posted: 06/28/11)
A new paper published in Circulation online shows that emergency medical services (EMS) transportation to the hospital is underused among ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Seeking to better understand the demographics and clinical factors associated with EMS transportation versus patient self-transportation, researchers examined ACTION Registry®-GWTGTM data. Results showed that EMS transport was used by only 60% of STEMI patients. For more on the findings, read the CardioSource Journal Scan. To register for a free CardioSource.org account, click here.

spacer  NCDR Study Examines the Impact of Door-In Door-Out Times on Outcomes for Primary PCI  (posted: 06/23/11)
A new ACTION Registry®-GWTGTM study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows improvement is needed in the treatment of heart attack patients who require transfer to another hospital for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

The paper, “Association of Door-In to Door-Out Time With Reperfusion Delays and Outcomes Among Patients Transferred for Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention,” studied time to reperfusion and patient outcomes associated with a door-in to door-out (DIDO) time. Uncovering room for improvement in this important measure, the study reinforces the importance of participation in ACTION Registry-GWTG and the AHA’s Mission: Lifeline, which identify gaps in care and identify opportunities for improvement.

spacer  ACC Announces Availability of AUC Metrics (posted: 06/13/11)
Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) metrics are now available as part of the 2010 fourth quarter report provided to CathPCI Registry® hospitals. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) is dedicated to high-quality cardiovascular care and believes that the use of AUC metrics can accelerate the delivery of personalized care for patients with coronary artery disease.

AUC metrics will provide hospital cath labs with valuable insights into their performance, as compared with national benchmarks. These metrics are currently labeled as “test metrics” and are to be used for self-assessment and quality improvement at the cath lab level. AUC metrics may be used to evaluate a cath lab’s overall case mix, lending insights into patient cohorts - subsets of patients who might be under, as well as, over treated. Test metrics are not valid for use in health plan payment programs or for public reporting purposes.

The ACC will be using the experience gained during this testing phase to refine and enhance the value of AUC to aid professionals in improving quality of care and enhancing patient outcomes.
