Pennsylvania Senate Approves Bill to Prohibit Gassing of Dogs, Cats

Legislation to prohibit the gassing of dogs and cats was unanimously approved by the state Senate, according to “Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9).

“Most people probably don’t even realize that gas chambers are still used for animal euthanasia in some shelters across Pennsylvania,” Senator Pileggi said. “I strongly support this legislation, which will eliminate an outdated and inhumane practice.”

Nearly 20 other states have already banned the use of carbon monoxide gas chambers for domestic animals. Senate Bill 1329 will require that domestic animals are euthanized by an injection of sodium pentobarbital, widely considered to be the most humane method of euthanasia.

Senate Bill 1329 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. More information about state issues is available at Senator Pileggi’s website, www.senatorpileggi.com.
