“Being chosen as a finalist for the Hasselblad Masters Competition from over 2500 entrants by a jury of 14 of the world’s top photographers is rather humbling. Having spent the past two and a half years reestablishing myself as a professional photographer has been a difficult and interesting road, and recognition from Hasselblad as a Masters finalist makes the effort all the more worthwhile.

In those 2 years, I’ve been working in the studio, applying Richard Avedon’s “Series of No’s” as a guideline to my still-life photography: “No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses or narratives.” All these no’s allowed him to get to the raw, unadorned and sometimes blemished beauty of his subjects. In my case, appliances and food, simplifying my work down to a few essentials: simple lighting, simple composition and execution.

Winning a competition like this, to be recognized by the international community for my vision and technical expertise, would be like receiving a secret handshake to an elite club who’s members are at the top of my “follow” list. And the subsequent opportunity to produce a personal Masters project with Hasselblad’s support and to be published with my peers is definitely the opportunity of a lifetime (and better odds than trying to win the lottery).”- says Wagner about being a 2011 Hasselblad Master Candidate.
