Opening Reception & Speakeasy After Party Fundraiser

The Home can be described as mysterious and foreboding with its palatial façade and manicured gardens securely locked away behind tall iron gates.   The Speakeasy is thus an apt metaphor connecting the contemporary reality of the site to the era in which the Home was founded: sometimes the most vibrant, exciting and unique aspects of culture lay underground.

Guests come to a night of uncovering history of the Home, its residents, and looking to the future of the Bronx.  Dressed in 1920s attire, guests arrive to explore the art in the three Ballrooms and mingle in the wood paneled library, surrounded by first editions of Capote and oil paintings of Mr. Freedman clad in fur.

Opening reception: 6-8pm

Speakeasy party: 8:30pm

From 6pm to 8pm, just like residents before, guests will enjoy a night of art and culture with artists like Mel Chin's film (5:45pm), Carmen Julia Herndez's red carpet (6pm) , Cheryl Pope 's choir (6:15pm), Art Jones' music  (8pm) and Sofia Maldonado's asapao soup (9:30pm), will premiere their films or performances.

Welcoming remarks at 7pm by the main organizers of This Side of Paradise followed by the kind words by Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene and City Council Member Jimmy van Bramer.

Music fills the late evening, starting with jazz of the 1920s leading us to Latin Jazz of the 1970's. Multi Grammy nominated percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be playing with his band Ascension. A generous thank you to Rob Sancho of Bronx Lebanon Hospital for the music.

The Speakeasy After Party is open to the public. However, we hope you will support No Longer Empty by purchasing a $65 tax-deductible ticket.  This ticket gives you access to an exclusively dedicated open bar to ticketholders. As well as stylish and practical NLE Baggu bag

Signature cocktails and punch are designed and provided by spacer

On your way up or down, listen to Bronx Historian Lloyd Ultan speak about Speakeasies in the Bronx here.
