Course Description:

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design go into effect on March 15, 2012, and replace the earlier version of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). This course will help you prepare yourself and your organization with:

  • A brief orientation on ADA Titles I, II and III, including a review of the ADA Title II and III changes and the 2010 amendments.
  • An explanation of the responsibilities of an ADA coordinator.
  • A review of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, including new construction, alterations, scope of coverage and specific applications.
  • A summary of the 2004 ADA Accessibility Guidelines, Chapters
    1–9.
  • An overview of architectural standards, the "brick-and-mortar" aspects of ADA compliance.

Who should attend?

  • City and county staff and ADA coordinators who have local enforcement responsibilities.
  • Construction professionals, architects and engineers who want to familiarize themselves with the revised accessibility requirements.
  • Advocates, people with disabilities, parents and other interested parties are invited and welcome to attend.

About the Instructors:

Troy Balthazor, M.Ed., is an information specialist for the Great Plains ADA Center. Balthazor provides local, regional and national training on multiple aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act and related topics. He serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Missouri; serves on the Boards of Directors for Mid-Missouri Legal Services and the PedNet Coalition, and is chairperson of the Mid-Missouri Advocacy Coalition.

Ray Petty works for the Great Plains ADA Center and provides training, technical assistance and consultation throughout a four-state region including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. He has been involved in the disability rights movement for more than 30 years, has served as legislative liaison for the Kansas Commission on Disability Concerns and was executive director of two independent living centers in Kansas.
