November 2008–Ice melt salt and driveway ice melter suppliers are gearing up for winter, and things are looking to come in a little short.
Recent reports from the major suppliers of ice melt products for both business and residential are letting retail locations know that salt this winter 2008 and 2009 could be in short supply sooner rather than later.
The problem is the salt mines were shut down and slowed down during hurricanes that hit the southern portions of the US earlier this summer. In addition to salt mines being impacted, delivery routes up and down the Mississippi river were halted for quite a while and that has caused a backup that cannot be overcome.
The impact will be faced mostly in regards to larger users of ice melt products, that being local streets and sanitation operations in Norhtern areas. There have even been reports of ice melter and rock salt being stolen from city stock piles.
Whoever would have thought that rock salt used to melt ice from roads would be something someone would want to steal and re-sell. But that seems to be some of the times we live in.

I have seen it all over the news already: ice melter is going to be in short supply for winter 2008 and 2009.
But you don’t need to worry. Hopefully you have found this site soon enough and can still order ice melter from my trusted suppliers.
I know that I have gone around to all the local big box home improvement stores and seen that they are beginning to stock up on snow shovels and snow blowers, but so far, I have not seen any ice melting products like calcium chloride.

When you do get your ice melter delivered from my supplier, just be sure to follow the directions printed on the label and put down the proper amounts. We don’t want you to damage your grass or shrubs by over-applying ice melter to your driveway or sidewalk.

Ice Melting products come in many varieties: Calcium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, and Urea. No matter which you choose or where you buy them, there are some common rules to follow when applying ice melter.*Don’t over apply the product. Ice melter is not “snowblower in a bag!” Follow the instructions on the label all the time, everytime.
*Don’t try to melt away a foot deep snow accumulation. Once again, ice melter is not “Snow Shovel in a bucket!” Before applying ice melting products, shovel away the majority of the snow that has built up.
* Don’t apply ice melt with your bare hands. Use a scooper. When you buy buckets of ice melt here, they come is a plastic scoop included for spreading the product.
*Make sure the container is tightly sealed when storing your ice melter. Ice melt products will absord moisture from the air and harden up, rendering them unusable.
*Don’t apply any ice melt product on top of new concrete that has not fully cured.
*All products will have an impact on vegetation like grass or shrubs. Be careful not to throw ice melting products onto plants or lawns directly. After winter is over, spring rains and melting snow will most normally take care of any buildup as long as you have not over-applied the product.
*Try to spread a thin layer of ice melt prior to snow and ice storms. This will make your shoveling and snow blowing easier in the long run.
