The thrill of life on a trail
spacer

When given the chance, Rick Yeomans heads to the mountains.  Growing up in Austria and Nepal, and living a number of years in New Mexico, he developed a real love for the higher elevations.

Although he enjoys hiking and climbing, he puts downhill skiing at the top of his list.  In 2008, he spent a week heli-skiing in northern British Columbia, something he had talked about doing for years.

“There’s really nothing that’s as much fun as skiing deep powder in the trees,” Rick says.  Here in Austin, Rick enjoys mountain biking, and running the trails with his wife and black lab.

Rarely a week goes by that Helen Foster doesn’t enjoy some quality time on Austin’s Lady Bird Lake, rowing port oar in a crew of eight.  Helen first tried rowing in college and started rowing at Austin Rowing Club over ten years ago.  The crew competes in masters-level races all over the country.  The ever-changing view from the crew shell is part of the draw – from Longhorn Dam to Redbud Isle, with Stevie Ray’s statue, cypress trees, Barton Creek kayakers, the Austin skyline, runners on the hike and bike trail, and herons, swans, ducks and egrets on the water.

In addition to rowing, Helen began a serious Yoga practice in 2005, and has since accomplished at least three perfect headstands!  The strength, stability and flexibility gained from Yoga are a nice complement to Helen’s rowing skills.  She also enjoys the meditative time to focus her thoughts and reenergize.

Even while on vacation, Helen and her family enjoy an active lifestyle.  Mountain hiking and snow-shoeing the trails of Estes Park, Colorado are a frequent get-away, as well as adventurous hikes through the Scottish, French and Italian country-sides.  Helen’s favorite destination is up on the tundra above the treeline where you can touch the clouds and the vistas are magnificent.

David Lein calls himself a “race junkie.” His love of running began in 2006, when he paced a friend in the Austin Marathon.  A year later, he was running in that marathon.  Since then, he's run the Austin Marathon in 2009 and 2010, and has plans to run the Boston Marathon in 2011.

Living in Austin provides the opportunity to participate in a race for charity almost monthly, so there’s always motivation to continue training. Although David spends a fair amount of time chasing after his two small children, he finds time to hit the pavement at least three times a week.  His favorite runs are around Austin’s Hike and Bike trail, through the hills of Tarrytown and Balcones, and on the streets of Allandale.
