About Dartmoor Arts Project

Dartmoor Art Project is an artist-led organisation founded in 2006. We host a busy summer school week as well as a year round programme of events and artists' talks, bringing excellent speakers to a rural part of the south west. We have set up a place where artists can come and learn new skills, further their ideas and join in lively critical debate.

About Dartmoor Arts Summer School

Dartmoor Arts Summer School takes place in the village of Drewsteignton, just a few miles outside Exeter. For one week every July we welcome a vibrant community of artists, educators, architects, designers and makers drawn from all corners of the UK and beyond.

Dartmoor Arts Summer School offers a wide range of courses taught by leading professional artists from the south west, the UK and around the world. We also present a rich and varied programme of talks by contemporary artists, curators and writers as well as music, performance and film screenings.

In 2011 artists Laura Ford, Bill Woodrow and David Nash and author Dame Margaret Drabble all joined us to give evening talks. 2012 will be equally exciting with a fantastic evening programme lining up.

During the week young, emerging and established artists have the space in which to explore their practice and realise the possibilities of their work in an dynamic, creative and supportive environment. The week is also about continual professional development, a space dedicated completely to making your own work. It is also about the opening up of opportunities for younger artists - many who have gone on to do amazing projects and exhibitions, inspired by the week, by our tutors, the artists they have met and the contacts they have made. Artist/educators take new skills away with them which they then share with their own students.

Students and tutors all stay in the village and practical workshops take place during the day at different venues around Drewsteignton. Each evening everyone descends upon the local pub to eat a delicious meal followed by the lively programme of events.

What makes our summer school unique is its relaxed, intimate scale where students have a chance to talk with leading artists, thinkers and writers on a one-to-one basis about their thoughts and ideas. The atmosphere is brilliant as artists work hard on their projects culminating in a productive end of week 'crit' and a tour of the other venues to see the work made by other students.
